What types of sites can be hosted on Linux hosting servers?

I would like to know whether I can host ASP.NET site on a Linux hosting server? Or is it that only PHP and HTML sites can be hosted on such a server?

If yes then do I need to change or configure any thing to make it run on linux hosting?

Please guide me.

Hey Chris,

A Linux server can technically run asp.net IF you have a VPS or dedicated and can install the necessary packages to allow this. I don't know of any Linux shared hosting providers that are setup to run asp.net

If you need to run .net, it is highly recommended to use a Windows hosting plan!

I would highly recommend getting a VPS or dedicated server with Microsoft Windows as the OS. This will make your life easier.

As others have said it's possible to run ASP.NET on Linux but imo not worth the grief. You need ASP always go windows.

Hello ,
As if you need you may host .net on linux by various method but the proper way to do this is to host it on windows .
It would be better if we think of future aspect.

Linux hosting platform is mainly for php,html sites. I believe most customers host php sites nowadays. If you need to stick with ASP.NET, you better go for windows hosting and that is the actual platform for ASP.NET .

You can use linux vps for hosting asp.net but you need to install necessary component. Basically linux servers are used for PHP, mysql,python etc hosting. It is best to use windows hosting for hosting asp.net.

To be honnest, I'd never recommend hosting ASP.NET websites on Linux, it is best to use a Windows Server 2008 or higher, 2012r2 seems to be great with hosting this kind of websites.

If you are referring to Linux Shared server, then it's highly recommend for PHP, HTML based websites.

Linux shared server is not recommended for ASP.NET websites.

Windows shared server is recommended for hosting ASP.net websites.

Like others covered the topic pretty well regarding ASP.NET websites, those can be run on a Linux server by using Mono, however keep in mind that Mono doesn't support all of the API's.

If you really require ASP.NET and need full support for it my suggestion would be to rent a VPS running Windows 2012 R2.
