Getting VPS from small providers

Is it risky to get a VPS from a small provider ? Someone who does not have the backing of a big name ? What are the things we should be careful about ?

Not at all. There are many small providers, that are more reliable then some of the large/well know providers.
Be sure to ask about their up-time guarantee, check their support response times, and look for honest customer reviews. (However stay away from the fake "Top 10 Hosts" type websites. WebHostingGeeks.com is a good place to find honest customer reviews.)

I have long lost trust in reviews. Most of the hosts fake it these days. I would be weather rather with a medium sized host than a big one. That's the best way to get good support.

It is not risky to get VPS from a small provider even you can get more advantages from them as big discounts, lower price, better support because they will want to give you the best services to compete with bigger providers. I like using VPS from small or medium hosting companies, they always gave me better services.
