Yes, thumbs up for BackBlaze.
Google drive too is a good option(something that I should integrate)

Advantages of online storage:-
  • Depending on what you buy, data is more reliable. In most cases, it offers high reliability.
  • Storage drives are usually on Enterprise hard drive, which last longer than desktop drives
  • Available 24x7
Disadvantages:
  • The only thing is to ensure encryption. Otherwise privacy issues.
  • Security to access the data is a key aspect. Whatever interface is providing you with the service, how secure is it?

Compared to having data stored online vs. having it stored on a hard disk on a physical computer:
You can secure your computer much better than an online storage. Not saying that an online storage has no security, but you can secure your PC better.
That's what I understood from my former boss, who had 1 huge computer running at all times to keep tracking, sending and storing data.

There are other very important considerations not mentioned yet. But first I must make an assumption here about your situation -- you mentioned "online data storage;" I am assuming your website is "online" (not at your physical location) but you want your backup to be stored on a different network or server that is also "online," i.e., what some would call "cloud storage?"

Here are a couple of things to consider when seeking a backup solution (or more properly, a disaster recovery solution)
  1. In the event of a disaster, how much downtime can you or your business tolerate before the disruption in business continuity becomes unacceptable. Your backup solution should allow you to restore all data and be back online within that time.
  2. How old can the last good copy of data be? For example if you do a full backup at 6am and 6pm and the system goes down at 2pm you will have 8 hours of data missing. Even with a continuous backup there is a time difference. How much time can you tolerate?
You didn't provide much details about your situation. If you have a basic shared web site that doesn't change much I would create and keep a full backup on the same server (as needed) for speedy recovery of deleted files and folders, and copy that backup to your local PC cloud storage such as Google or OneDrive in case of total failure of web server. This can all be automated and your host should be able to provide you with some solutions.

Oh, thanks for sharing this post. It is helpful to me as well as I also have this thoughts in my mind. It is secure even those online data storage with pay or how much more for those that are free?

I am also thinking of the pros and cons of using online data storage.

I have fear to save online data via online storage and that it might hack by others. Specially now that the technology is advance and social media has great impact and influence people nowadays. My data might use against me.

Well, I'm completely for the cloud storages. Once you choose a reliable company, your data is be safe.

Yes, most of the packages have a limited space and once you reach this limit you have to buy more. But if you have a medium size business a regular package should be enough. Personally I use 100 GB of disk space on the Google Drive and it is pretty much enough for my website images and urls.

On the other hand you are dependent on the connection. So, once it's down you can't really access what you need. It never happened to me, actually, but I know some guys who really lost their money due to the connection issues.

It is completely up to you whether to store your data on a cloud or on a hardware. Just remember to have backups no matter what you choose :)

The answer comes from the question: because data storage is online you can use your «cloudy» information only with internet access. If you overdue storage period you may lose your data. If you don't encrypt your data it is risky. I'm just trying to say that online data storage is only the instrument, and there are a lot of different services such as BackBlaze, GoogleDrive, Mega, IDrive etc., but how you manage with it that is what makes an influence on that advantages and disadvantages for you.

Storing your data online is indeed having advantages and disadvantages. On the advantage side - it is low cost, very easy to access and you have a total control on your data. On the other hand, disadvantages are the security of your data, because it can crash anytime leaving you with no data at all. Second, you need to have a good internet connection to access your data. You will also make an additional cost for paying online data storage if you need more space.

Online data storage is more helpful for you because with this method you can access your data when you want. Also, there is no data loss.
the only disadvantage is if someone knows your id password or hack your account then your data is not safe.

I am just wondering about its download/upload speed :)
the only disadvantage is if someone knows your id password or hack your account then your data is not safe.
Should I compress files with password before uploading to online storage?
