I saw many companies offer Virtual Private Server hosting beside their shared hosting services.

I was wondering what are the differences, pros and contros between them.

Thanks

Shared Hosting
An account on a server with many other people which is often all that is needed for a small personal or business site.

VPS
A VPS is your own private server which you have complete control over.

Advantages of shared hosting:
No technical maintenance of the server is required.
It's a good option if you have smaller websites
Disadvantages of shared hosting:
The performance of your website can be effected by websites hosted on the shared server
Limited number of resources
Advantages of VPS hosting:
You will have large bandwidth and storage
You have no limitation for the configuration on the server
Disadvantages of VPS hosting:
The maintenance of the server will need technical expertise
It usually cost more that shared hosting

Unfortunately, a VPS is not alway guaranteed to perform better than a Web Hosting account and vice-verser; it depends on the providers business model. I would say one of the biggest advantages to using a VPS over a Web Hosting account is the be ability to be able to use Root SSH access.

Why? web hosts care this for you?

On some shared hosting packages, hosting providers can allow you use ssh but not root to control your account if you required. Of course is not easy to find providers offering this.

Yes with shared hosting, that's not your job to make sure the server is running properly.

SSH is a security risk for a shared hosting provider, and if some are allowing ssh, it doesn't give you the ability to install anything on the server. It's only to run some php commands in chrooted environnement.
With a VPS, you are free to install anything you want.

In my opinion, neither shared hosting nor vps hosting is better than the other because you are comparing apples and oranges. It depends on the project, your budget, and your level of expertise. Nonetheless, because you can find many quality VPS for cheaper than many shared hosting plans, if you have the expertise, I would advocate VPS 99% of the time.

In my opinion, shared hosting is those who just needs to start the hosting or have to host some of his personal sites and do not have the expertise of setting and managing a server. VPS will be more expensive if you do not have the expertise to manage the server and having a cpanel license extra can further more increase the expense. So those who are not having enough knowledge I will say you can stay with shared hosting and should only move to VPS hosting if you can get enough profit even after those license , server, sysadmin/mangement payments.

Agreed. I think it's also worthy to add that cPanel isn't the be all end all for hosting panels. In fact, there are a lot of much lighter-weight panels available for personal use such as Webmin or Sentora to name a few.

I don't think any web hosts are offering Webmin or Sentora on their shared offers, they are free panels abut should be offered to customers.
Also, I tried Webmin and Sentora, they are hard in using or control websites on them. cPanel and Directadmin are more popular.

Shared Hosting Service your site hosted in an shared environment where you can able to use only limited amount of resource.
But in VPS(Virtual Private Server) You will get Dedicated Resource you can use it with. With VPS you will get Complete Server access (SSH)

Advantages of Shared Hosting

It a good option if you have a limited number of blogs and smaller websites as it is easy to maintain.
It has an economical advantage.
Technical maintenance of the server is not required, therefore you do not need a special skill set to handle your website.
You can demand for extra storage space.
All kinds of software, including virtualized software can be installed.

Disadvantages of Shared hosting

Limited number of resources.
Your website performance may be affected by other websites hosted on the shared server.
You might have to face long term problems with scalability and backup.
There is a possibility to face security issues for sharing a common server.
You might have to configure firewall settings for certain applications.
You will have a limited customer support only.

Advantages of VPS Hosting

You will have a huge space and bandwidth which enables you to do what you like.
You can upgrade or downgrade your subscription at any time.
You can configure anything you wish on the server as you own it.
Run your own batch files to create multiple services inside the server using shell access.
You can avail an extensive and dedicated 24/7 Customer Support which will help you have better security levels.
You can have easy scalability and backup in this method.
User partitioning enables you to custom firewall configurations.

Disadvantages of VPS Hosting

You need a dedicated system administrator to take care of your server.
It is usually costly so you should be careful with cheap offers.
You must be particular with certain applications as they might have issues running in a virtualized environment.

Differences

Shared hosting and VPS hosting have a lot of differences as listed below:

Resources: Shared hosting will have access to a limited number of resources only while the VPS hosting allows private disk spaces, having greater resource availability.
Security: Shared hosting is comparatively less secure than VPS hosting.
Platform: Shared hosting provides a basic level of file system and compartmentalization while GreenGeeks offers OpenVZ and Xen Linux Virtualization.
