Last year when I was working with a small group of friends for a client, he insisted that we should enable a LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) for his web application, and after doing some research and of course, satisfying the client, I heard it's getting kind of popular on big web apps that need a big user database.

For those who don't know, here's a small link explaining what LDAP is: What is LDAP?

I believe LDAP is more secure as it supports SSL and TLS security solutions. And it offers a central repository for information of an entire organization. Apart from these LDAP offers flexibility in terms of when transferring databases, as it also supports a no. of back-end databases. I guess LDAP is a great solution for web applications.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Indeed most of the experience I had with LDAP was making a back-end database for registering users and include different levels of hierarchy, such as admin, moderator and regular user, and also transfering the data the client already had from another web application. I didn't know it offered a central repository, that's a big plus in my book.

Cheers!

LDAP is useful to find the network. It is stored in directory and that directory provided you the network location details. LDAP is distributed among multiple server. One server has main directory and other stores the replica of it.

Main aim of LDAP is for network administrator that he can place information of all users at one places so it become easy to access the information like username , password and intranet name on which they are present.

Please note, LDAP is not database, it is used to query the data from database. It supports SSL/TLS too so can be used to store the sensitive information.

Hope this information will help you. :)
