It is at least safer than hosting by yourself, unless you really really know what you're doing. Hosting companies always keep their server updated with the latest security updates in order to prevent any leak of information or even been hacked. What you should care the most, is to secure your credentials to administrate your hosted site, using strong password and logging from a "safe" computer.
If you host by your own, you should meet high security standards to keep your host safe from attackers. Or else bad things could happen.
