Let me give you a few results that I have found so far:

1) Short tail keywords has more traffic than long tail ones.
2) Conversion rates for long tail keywords are higher than for the short ones.
3) The bounce rate for long tail keywords is higher than for the short ones.

You see, that the kind of the keyword you actually choose depends on what your goals are. If its only for the traffic - short tail keywords should be used.

Actually, the optimization of long tail keywords for the purpose of SEO will be the better choice when compared to short tail keywords optimization, because long tail keywords are somewhat easier to get ranked on search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo). Also, nowadays the importance of long tail keywords got increased due to the growth of smart phone usage.

Long tail keywords help to rank your website faster in search engines, as they have relative low searches. They bring in a considerable amount of traffic to your website. Short tail keywords are more difficult to rank, but once they are at the top you get the maximum traffic from them.

It is stupid to even consider one or the other. What kind of keywords are people who would benefit from your product or service using? That is what you should target. Don't get hung up on stupid stuff like long tail versus short tail. Waste of time.

Where is your market? That is who you need to be in front of.

I totally agree with SEOPub

You shouldn't bother about long and short tail keywords. Your ultimate goal is to reach to the targeted audience - and how you are going to that?

Choose keywords - what your prospective customers are searching for.
