What storage would site owners prefer to back up their websites on? I am looking at the following options:-
- Dedicated server
- DigitalOcean block storage
- AWS EBS based storage

We have an option to sync backup data to any S3 compliant/BackupBlaze, from storage server. Would user prefer dedicated server as storage? Besides we have an option to sync to multiple destinations, for Geo redundancy.

I am inclined towards dedicated servers, cause I can let Hosting provider have their own storage, so that they can sell backup service to their hosting customers. And the storage nodes can be near Hosting server, for super fast backup.

The most economical solution is to colocate a server. It will offer more storage at lower monthly cost and it would be customized. Dedicated server is not a bad solution, but it is much more expensive. I would not consider AWS for that.

Thank you for your suggestions.

From other reviews, I have to come to few things:
- I will keep a redundant copy on AWS EBS.
Redundant copy is a functionality coupled with storage node, allowing to keep replicas across multiple Geo location. You can choose and configure n number.

- For speed, I can stick to dedicated server near Hosting server or I can choose nearest AWS. AWS has more EBS options. DO block storage are SSD, which might be too much for a backup.
The only issue with AWS storage is that download traffic is billed separately, and can become a huge pain. Miscreants can misuse the service.

Depends on how much you need to backup. Cheapest option is to set up your own NAS cluster. Or just get a super cheap dedicated server with 2tb SATA drives. Amazon or other service (even DO) is going to get expensive when you need to backup hundreds of GB.

AWS EBS is more reliable. Even the cold storage option has backup redundancy to another DC in same location.
DO block storage only has SSD block storage. Not sure if they keep replica to another DC.

In terms of security, AWS Datacenter has some compliance standards like SOC or something. Not sure about DigitalOcean.

From network security standpoint, they are all same, from my view. Infact cloud instances are more crowded, with shared public network interfaces. Noisy!

I plan to offer. EBS cold storage is cheaper and reliable(replica to another DC in same location) than others. It starts with 500G at 0.02$/GB.

I like this service too. When you offer, let me know to check it.

Will you have guide to help users upload data to it?

Sure, I will be making a free offer to all forum users, for 6months. It will not have redundant back up to AWS EBS, though.
But you can add Backup_Sync(free offer), to configure BackBlaze or any S3 compliant to keep another personal copy, that you can download anytime.

We have a forum too, https://forum.bountysite.com for BountySite Customers only, to share/discuss/feedback.

I want to provide free lifetime offer to blog/forums, in exchange for a link somewhere at the bottom of the blog/forum "Backup by BountySite link". All security features and security patches will be free.

The process of adding site -> buying(0$) -> Configuring FTP has been documented.
https://www.bountysite.com/video_tutorials.html

Each page in CP has corresponding help link. It is still a work in progress.

In coming days, I will post the offer details.

What are differences between free and paid option?

In the case, I want to buy this service for my clients then I may want to have paid services because I think it will be better features and support.

We made 1GB limit for 1 site and 1 db, as free plan. It backups on single hard drive. In case of failure, start fresh backup, loosing initial history.
In terms of security, they all have same level.

Free plan support is via Forum only. Free plan is for as long as site owner wants and available till stock exists. This is apart from special offers for forum/blog owners, where we offer on case to case basis.
Paid plans have trial periods, where you can test and only subscribe on satisifaction.

BountySite is highly customizable. Say, you are a reseller with 200 sites, we can deploy BYOS(Build Your Own Storage), where we fully manage storage server, at 149$ 99$/500sites/pm. You can support your own customers' issues, with the information available within the control panel. You can design/price/build/market/sell your own backup service.

Ridiculous wholesale pricing! Dont you agree?

The Free plan can be split into:-
  • Introductory Free Plan -
    • Initially free for a duration, then move to paid version.
  • Affiliate Program -
    • For forum/blog, Lifetime free for upto 50GB per site.
    • No redundant backup
  • 1GB Free plan
    • Limited offer, depending on replenishing new nodes
    • Storage nodes on RAID0. High chances of data failure. We do plan to add 1GB pa for 1$ for a RAID1. We may switch off free plan for new sites.
    • A plan which helps us to get better in security. With more sites, BountySite platform learns more to catch malwares and threats.
Paid plans features:-
  • 1 Redundant backup on AWS EBS
  • RAID1 or above
  • Faster Performance
  • Less crowded
  • CP Support -> to create tickets. Follow up on email.
CP features are same for free and paid plans. The difference is mostly storage and data reliability.
Do note that all plans are billed per site, and not per customer account.

More than direct customers, we are targeting Resellers(Hosting Providers and Resellers):-
  • Partners can build own storage:-
    • Specs:
      • ECC RAM 16GB+ (more, the better)
      • Enterprise HDD n x 2Tb+ (best 4 drives)
      • 2 x 256GB+ SSD drives for really good performance
      • Any CPU with Virtualization support
      • Vanilla Debian Stretch with minimal install with ssh. We will not deploy, if we find any discrepancy in the installation.
    • We will fully manage. For security reasons, we will not share access
    • Configure n number of redundant backups, with one copy on our server
    • Price independently
    • Fixed monthly price for every 1,000 sites
    • CP(for partner) has features to handle support own clients
    • Provisioning API and use own platform for billing
    • WHMCS module to use BountySite packages with WHMCS billing
    • CPanel module(Hosting server install) - Continuous File Monitoring to backup changes quickly(can be used for Premium customers)
  • SMB Resellers(< 1000 customers)
    • Backup on our platform as per our site
    • Site owners pay us, and we pay Resellers rev share
    • CP(for partners) to support own customers
    • Continuous File Monitoring can be added, and bill along with your hosting prices.
  • In partner cases, we solve escalated tickets via CP. We plan to add chat support for quick resolution, for partners only.
  • Concierge service:- Partner users with appropriate rights, can login as site owner user, to troubleshoot.
Do note that BountySite is not going to do any magic cleaning all malware/threats on day one. As of today, there is significant manual work, to update signatures. As we build, we get better with time.
