You've got plenty of options. Here's an article covering the top 10 freelancing sites of 2018. The best way to get the feel of them is to take your time and browse their offers.

All are legit and the pay depends on your niche, skills, and expertise. Of course, if you're a complete novice to the freelancing world, it'll take some time, patience, and effort to build your portfolio and a loyal client base.

You can also try and search niche specific websites, for example, just for writers or developers. Some may pay even better than the general freelancing sites.

Good luck!

My personal experience of working at freelance sites isn't good. I've tried upwork, freelancer, proz and others. The competition is enormous. Fifty people per one job offer. I gave up this idea and started sending my CV to agencies who work with freelancers where I got some opportunities.

If you can write well, I would highly suggest Blogmutt. You would be ghost writing blog posts for various websites. You simply pick a topic from the list of sites, write a blog post for that site, and if they like it they will buy your post from you. Pay starts at $8. Some website owners want super long posts and will pay you more. You will have to write a sample blog for them, and they'll review it and give you a rating. If you're a very talented writer, you can make pretty good money working for them.

Sites like Fiverr can have a decent payout, so long as you have a skill you're proficient at, but even then you need to have a first customer, for which you need to advertise to your best content. Otherwise, potential customers won't be able to find you.

Then there are sites with microtasks and surveys, where they'll have some simple things for you to do (instead of doing your own thing). Of course, small tasks have small payout, so if you don't enjoy doing the tasks, it's really not worth it. The payout is actually so low, that you need unlimited internet access, otherwise you're using your internet to pay back bits of your internet.

And then there's sites like Patreon, where you do your creative project(s) and people can send you money every month to support you, so they get to see more of what you got. Again, like Fiverr, you need to advertise a bit too, but in this case, you can just do your thing, and wait for people to simple donate to you, rather than waiting for work.
