Is it the activity, the appearance or both? For me, I would say both but I think the activity and content that members sharing will decide success of a forum. What about you? What attracts you or people to a forum? Any thoughts?

People are get attacted to forum if they can relate the topic and can say something about it. I guess, if its in term of health issues, many would participate the forum because everyone of us has different health condition that we can share to everybody.

What attracts me to forums is the fact that your problems are solved, solved again if not clear to you and so on until you get what you wanted. People also talk about their experiences too, experience is the best teacher.

Well, a forum needs to be active and have engaged members, without those there is little to attract interest.
I think for a forum to be truly successful, it needs to be fully committed to its members and then that helps build the community.
Without the community the forum is nothing and it is the members that will determine if a forum is successful.

A nice, smooth, easy to navigate interface is always a plus, but ultimately forums are all about the community and the value it provides. Knowledgeable and friendly members, professional and honest moderators are forum's main assets. And, of course, the community should be active. New daily threads and discussion are what keeps a forum alive.

I'd say the activity more-so than the appearance.

I tend to depend on forums for various products because the information is more likely to be helpful than going through the product's support channels.

I've found that a lot of times, it seems like the company that sells a product doesn't really use their product. They know how it's suppose to work. They know the ins and outs of it. But when an unexplained issue pops up - they have no clue. Whereas forums and discussion groups with other people that actually use the product, they are more likely to relate to the issue that is being experienced.

But obviously that can't happen without activity and knowledgeable activity at that.

What attracts me to any forum is the quality of the threads and responses. I'm looking for value-add information first and foremost.

Truly, it would be hard to keep up with a forum that you have very little to write about. Though some forums are interesting, they may not actually be your own interest. People like different things and opinions are also different.

I think what really attracts people to join a certain forum is the topic, something that involves their field of interest or hobby or something that involves current events.

What attracts people to join a forum is the discussion or the topic which they can relate to. Some people just wants to gain additional knowledge, enjoy the discussions and help answer questions which they can relate to.

I agree with this point but there are more forums having same discussion forums with interesting topics there but just some are successful with active members and posting there while others are no.

I think it's the content of the forum and if the persons interests is basically included the forum. There are forum's that goes for a single topic like tech and games. But having an off topic discussion's makes some people attracted specially when one of the topic is interesting to him/her.

You can attract people if your forum is for the future and interesting forum. like for money earnings or looking for a love dating people, Job, that can give its depends on the people they want if one person looking for love they looking for a dating site forum or maybe a person that there is no money that looking for job they look for a new job that is more easy and big salary.

In my opinion, the important things that attacks people to the forum are : first of all the forum must be active it means there are people who are answering and discussing everyday, also the forum must be useful that means people must learn some new things from it and especially enjoy it! For exemple yesterday I learned something about windows in a forum I found in this website, that helped me a lot.

I believe it has something to do with the engagement. The more your forum is able to provide good knowledge and engagement, people will come back to your forum.
There are some incentives which obviously help; but one should not rely on them completely. This is where people are so into creating a niche and reaching out to people who are willing to contribute on those topics.

it is

- the members with same enthusiast, they want to interact with another members
- the activity, including meetup if any
- the moderation, forum admin is enthusiast with the topic, not just like facebook/twitter admin that generally

I lack communication in real life because I've got an in-house job. So, I enjoy reading forums a lot. It creates an illusion of communication for me. I am very interested in someone's personal experience in different things and this is the main reason why I prefer forums.

I would say that the topic and the activity of the forum.
I can't talk in a forum with a topic I don't know. For example, I can't talk in a forum where the topic is the components' of the computers. I don't know a single thing about this.
And the activity because it shows if the forum is still active and has impact on the persons. I would not go to a forum where the conversations are dead since 2016, for example.

I think these days to get people on a forum, you have to be really niche. But that niche also needs to have a wide enough appeal that it will have enough of a community in the first place. It's a difficult balancing act. The downside is that the further "niche" you go, the fewer people would potentially be interested. I mean, if you make a forum for people who like to watch tightrope walking baby brown bears that also sing while walking, you'll probably have a bad day. But you can't just make a forum for people who just like any and all cat videos and expect that to work well. Finding that sweet spot is tough.
