One of my clients wanted to upgrade from a VPS on Linode to a dedicated server and I recommended him Hetzner and OVH but I don't know which one is better. I read around on this forum and seem everyone is recommending OVH more than Hetzner. Is that correct? anyone used both, please give me your advice. Many thanks!

For dedicated servers, it's pretty hard to let you what is the best choice. Because both of them are trusted providers, with a good network and uptime, but you will have to compare each servers to find the best compromise between specifications and price.
For example, almost all my servers are from OVH, but I have two hertzner servers because I was looking for 6TB storage, and hertzner offers was better.

Compare CPU perf with cpubenchmark.net, and try to find the best offer for your needs.

I know that site but I don't know how to compare CPU cores between 2 different dedicated servers.

Can you give me an example to decide which one is better if I have 2 different servers?

Hetzner is way better in terms of support than OVH. So I would go for Hetzner if I were you.

Vice versa, I would choose OVH because its hardware and features are better then Hetzner because I tried both.
Perhaps, support from Hetzner is more better but I am not sure about this because I didn't need more support from OVH when run websites on their hosting.

You're right Hetzner has better support, but they use desktop computers, OVH better because they has quality server's , but their support is bad, you can buy OVH server through reseller and you will have support + good HW.

I know that the comment is now a bit old, so I apologize for just now responding. We only use PC grade hardware in our EX series servers, which are our lowest-priced servers, and in some of the servers in our server auction. The rest of our products now use server-grade hardware. --Katie

Well, if you already know then there's nothing more to discuss. I've left OVH since a while ago, you will find out yourself I guess :)

In case of dedicated server experience for everyone won't be same. It really depends on what you need. Both of them have good reputation but it's really tough to specify which one is perfect for you.

+1 for OVH.
You get 16 free IPs (you pay just the "setup fee" $3 for each IP), Hetzner will charge you every month, OVH - unlimited traffic, no set up fees, set up within a few hours.

OVH is too dam slow against Downloading files or transferring files.. even a little migration from other network to OVH is pain full. And there is NO SUPPORT. 100% - no support.

Did you read their TOS? They RENT to you the HARDWARE and therefore they ONLY fix issues which are hardware related. In this case the support will fix it immediately.

What do you meant under "NO SUPPORT" then?

You have missed something like this excerpt of their policy:

"As the owner of your server, you have control over all aspects of the installation and configuration of software. Because you are the SysAdmin of your server, and to ensure the utmost security of your data, we do not have any access to the software on your machine, nor can we provide any support for it. We provide the infrastructure, and you provide the software expertise!"

"The Customer is the administrator of the server rented from the Supplier. The Customer may
install software applications on the server themselves. In this instance, they accept full
responsibility for carrying out these installations, and the Supplier shall not be liable for any
malfunctioning of the server in relation to these installations."

"The Customer is reminded that any intervention by the Supplier of the Customer's dedicated
server is limited to the installation of the server. For this reason, the Supplier only provides rental
of the specialised infrastructure and does not assume any control over the contents of the websites
hosted or the contractual relationship of the editors of these sites and their hosting provider, or the
Customer under the dedicated server rental contract."

Hetzner support is better but they take time to deliver server, it take days, while ovh deliver very fast. Both providers need id for first order.

If a customer is ordering with us for the very first time, yes, our team will request ID information to confirm that it is not a fake order or part of a scam. We find that this drastically reduces abuse. However, this process is not automated. My colleagues in the sales department, who work traditional business hours, review the orders. This means, unfortunately, that if someone makes a first-time order on a Friday evening, the order will not be deployed until Monday, after the order can be reviewed. During traditional work hours, my colleagues can review orders much more quickly.
Once a customer has ordered with us once, all future orders will go much more quickly. I have seen many cases where customers' orders were deployed in under 30 minutes. --Katie, Marketing

Hi Dr. McKay, Please see our wiki page on our current delivery times: https://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Auftragsbearbeitung/en For many of our products, it usually it takes a few minutes for customers who are not first-time customers. Some models, espeically special orders, can take a bit longer. In rare occassions, when there is incredibly high demand for a particular model like during a sale, it may take longer than usual to process the orders.
We can often confirm orders with first-time customers within a day. But if a first-time customer orders outside of normal business hours, then it will take longer. --Katie, Marketing

@Dr. McKay I would not suggest anyone to get any kind of web hosting services from companies who are heavily underbidding the market and are looking like a Ponzi scheme. When anyone who has self-respect and respect for others in this industry see any of those leasing Dedicated servers at prices which barely pay the cost of electricity and infrastructure, one would better not support them.

Hetzner like OVH are just smart when they use components from the previous generation on their low cost hosting services.
In OVH case, prices are low because they build themself each dedicated server, before putting them in datacenters without air-conditioning (water-cooling).

The main difference with other hosting companies ? Their location : outside US.

@VirtuBox With al the respect, those are no good reasons to underbid the market and sell dirty cheap servers. "location: outside US" is not something that helps any data center to reduce costs, especially those for electrical power. It is actually the opposite. European companies pay double or even triple the price on power that their U.S. competitors do. I don't know about whether any company uses depreciated hardware for their dedicated server or not.

I'm not saying OVH or Hetzner use depreciated hardware, but only hardware from their previous "premium" offers.
For example with OVH, a dedicated server (XEON, SSD, DDR4 RAM etc..) will be used for few years, then it will be reconditioned before being available for a lower price on Soyoustart. And after few years, it will finally be available on Kimsufi.

Since last week, some servers with XEON W3520 are available on kimsufi, this CPU was released in 2009..
For me OVH prices are not too cheap, because there is no support or server management service provided by OVH. And for me, service and support account for at least half of the price with a dedicated server.

If it's not easy to sell dedicated servers cheaper than OVH, it's not really hard to provide a better service and custom experience.

@VirtuBox let's make it simple. You pay too much attention on those, despite them being unimpressive and following the pattern set but the corporate structure (and very likely the rules that apply to subsidized companies) behind them. I'll be happy to see your company (all other providers managed by hardworking individuals ) growing and being discussed, rather than those corporate slugs, who are unconcerned about the industry's ethics.

@HostColor - I will do my best to respond to your comments here. We are not a "Ponzi scheme". Yes, our prices are very low. You can read about how we are able to offer such low prices at this article on our customer wikipedia: https://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Hetzner_Pricing/en Except for some of our auction servers and for our cheapest dedicated servers (the EX line) all of our servers use enterprise-grade hardware. (And as far as I know, it is similar at OVH.)
Yes, we repurpose hardware in our server auction. This serves two purposes: 1) it allows people who otherwise couldn't afford dedicate servers the chance to have one 2) it means that the servers are still useful, which we love. It's a win-win situation. Many of our auction servers run for years without any issues, and if a hardware component becomes defective, our team replaces it of course. --Katie, Marketing

I did not pint a finger to any specific company, this would be immature and unfair. I'm talking about the model and the arguments used to justify the model. You have associated the company you represent (despite the fact) that it was not mentioned in my posts with the service model I described as "looking like a Ponzi scheme". Having said that and without going against your company, yourself or against any specific entity I'd say that all Ponzi scheme alike activities usually justify their existence with something like "it allows people who otherwise couldn't afford ... the chance to have one". You did not address none of the issues I have described above, so please save one's time to read marketing posts.

We simply need to calculate the costs of doing business in any specific country, when any "fictional web hosting provider does business", for example Germany or France. Those include the cost of electricity, the labour costs in clouding the social and security and healthcare payments, taxes and some other things. Then we'd simply go and examine the pricing models. The results speak for itself.

I know that if investors pour money into any business and when ti take subsidies it would work for a certain period of time. Then it needs either to sell or to restructure.

@HostColor I am sorry if I caused any offense. I was not trying to. I would like to respond to your other comments, but to be completely honest, I am not sure that I understand exactly what you're trying to say. I am still unsure why you think we are a Ponzi scheme. For a Ponzi scheme to work, there must be investors. (Those are the people who get cheated in Ponzi schemes.) We at Hetzner Online are not asking for investors. We are a completely privately-owned company. The services that we provide are real. They are low-priced, but they are genuine services.
I really am not sure -- Are you calling Hetzner Online a "fictional web hosting provider"...? Maybe this is a linguistic misunderstanding...? Please understand that I mean no offense with my response. --Katie, Marketing

Hi!
Since I could not create a separate topic I will write here.
We have a small company, we work as wholesale resellers with OVH and Hetzner, so we often have lower prices for dedicated servers.

We have several tens of these dedicated servers:
i7-4790K [4c-8t] (4.4GHz) / 32 GB DDR3 1333 MHz / 240 SSD / 500 Mbps / Anti-DDoS-GAME / EU (FR) / Price $50, Installation $24 (Linux or Windows OS) https://prnt.sc/n6tmj3
i7-4790K [4c-8t] (4.4GHz) / 16 GB DDR3 1333 MHz / 120 SSD / 500 Mbps / Anti-DDoS-GAME / EU (FR) / Price $40, Installation $24 (Linux or Windows OS)
You can order these servers from us.

Hello,
this server is available on Soyoustart for $50/mo with $24 setup fees, so your prices are exactly the same than official site.

They are not always available on the official website, as the tariff is very profitable and popular. Also on many of these servers you will not be able to install Windows, and we can install almost any OS. Also we can pay in different ways, even BTC. And you will not need to spend time on long communication with the support of Soyoustart. Through us, the client will receive a fast dedicated server at a bargain price and excellent support.

@Edward an advertising thread doesn't not belong here. Neglecting the rules and the best practices isn't a good thing.

I used both in years and i see that Hetnzer is more stable with less downtimes than OVH but server OVH seems a bit loading faster than Hetnzer if you have same configs for both servers.
