Explain SEO hosting

Got myself into some threads and found a new stuff that I don't really know about can someone please explain some things about this..

Some said that it is used to host sites so that you can use it to posses multiple IP addresses while

Some said that it is used to host multiple sites on a single IP address, so that really confused me and made me to come here and get an answer..

I would say that hosting that allows you to possess multiple IP addresses will get you in trouble with Google and maybe other search engines also - because it all smells of some sort of SEO scheme, something like a private blog network. Anyway, though, I see plenty of results for SEO hosting, but it just seems like that Google would want to bust those sort of things. However, that was really true, though, these companies wouldn't make money, right?

SEO Hosting comes with many ips from different blocks, the idea is to create network of directories or blogs so that one can create free backlinks. It is old technique Google had become smart and you will probably blacklisted by using such technique or listing yourself in such network.
