MariaDB is the new and improved version of MySQL. It's faster, more extensive, and it's truly open source (transparent operations too).

Always go with MariaDB.

You can read more about it at their official website

Depending on the design of the Database, we have actually seen some performance gains out of MySQL 5.7 over MariaDB. Also there are several commercial scripts that wont work or that have issues with MariaDB. So you should do your research on which is the better option for you.

By checking some benchmark between the last release of MariaDB 10.1 and MySQL 5.7, performances are very similar and in some case (with a lot of connections for example), MySQL is better than MariaDB.
So, the main feature or MariaDB is it's open-source.
