I am having a new dedicated server and starting installing software for it. I would like to hear your advice which will work best for Wordpress or Wordpress will run best on which Os, Ubuntu vs Centos? I am going to install cPanel or Plesk on this server.

Thanks in advance.

With cPanel, you haven't the choice, you will have to use Centos, but for Plesk you can choose between Centos 7, Debian 8 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. With a control panel, your chocie will not have a real impact to setup your WordPress websites. The only difference between linux distributions are always their packages repository, for example I'm using Debian 8 because I can use dotdeb.org and get the latest versions of my favorite packages.
But with a control panel, all packages are downloaded directly from the panel repository.

Plesk seems a bit lighter and cheaper if compared with cPanel.
Other than that, you can go with your decisions, both of them are good but I prefer Centos because it has more support from the community.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in our experience and from what I've seen, Cpanel is very SSL friendly in that it makes sure you have SSL running by default and renews via CPanel. Plesk doesn't seem to do that. You need to take care of SSL on your own... I agree that CentOS seems to have more support with the hosting community and Plesk is cheaper. All our VPS accounts run Plesk.

Doesn't mattter what OS you use for wordpress , it works perfectly on even Windows too provided the the server is tweaked , tuned and the wordpress is updated with latest version and have secured it and optimized it. Simple !!!!

Since your choice is limited to cPanel or Plesk, why not introduce a 3rd option like CentOS Web Panel, it requires CentOS 6.x or 7.x and is a free cPanel look like with pletny of features. My suggestion would be to stick with CentOS if your using this for a personal project, if you are planing on selling hosting services go for CloudLinux + cPanel.

For ruunning wordpress I don't think you should be much intense about OS and configurations. wordpress perfectly works fine on any OS.

IMHO, ubuntu is debian based and it is more stable than centos/redhat base os.
The memory management is better in my experience. i have a cacti monitoring server that run ubuntu for 3 years without any reboot.
But for your wordpress based website, it really depend on your amount of ram and visitors and the storage type e.g. ssd/mechnical hdd like SAS/SATA. Normally the bottleneck is on the HDD and RAM.

Mostly centos preferred with cpanel. If you want increase speed use light speed server instead of apache server. Also use best cdn for good results.

WordPress will work perfectly fine regardless of the OS. Now if you're talking about SSD versus HDD or any number of other variables, your server and site can be optimized for best performance.

Operating system won't matter at all when it comes to website performance.
Optimize your webserver, use as few plugins as possible and keep Wordpress up to date and that'll be good enough!

Hello,

CentOS and Ubuntu are good for webHosting solution. But we recommend CentOS because CentOS support many hosting panel like cpanel and it will help to a end user to easily handling their hosting solutions.

I don't think Wordpress will depends on any OS or hosting panels because it only requires PHP and Mysql to run and just minimum requirements for these.

I agree with you @racksandcloud, CentOS was popular and being used because it supported for many hosting control panels.

Late to the party, and at this point, that server is probably already setup and running, but for anyone else, Ubuntu over Centos, and another panel over cPanel. Going with cPanel limits what can be done to a Server or VPS, especially if speed is important.

In case you choose cPanel, go with CentOS. CentOS is easy to manage and many people prefer it.

Plesk is more powerful than cPanel and offer you more freedom when it comes to running a distro of your choice on a server. So, if you want to run CentOS or Ubuntu you will have to go with it.

I would only choose CentOS for CPanel since I am more familiar with it over Plesk.

On the other hand, I would choose Ubuntu or Debian if I were to install Wordpress via ssh. It really isn't that hard and you can save your server some resources without having a front end.
