I am using Wordpress sites on a VPS but woud to have a new VPS next weeks for new Wordpress sites, in the first step when choosing a new server, I used to be confused between selecting CentOS or Ubuntu, which is better option for Wordpress? I would like to have Nginx and Redis cache setup for a speedy website so please give me your experience on choosing an OS.

Both will do the same work, its only your choice on which OS to use. We personally use centos in most cases, so choose which one you prefer.

For a simple WordPress site, whatever you choose will work just fine. There's no better/best option.

If you had a more complicated setup, then you'd need to carefully choose which distro you're going to use. CentOS seems to be more popular in the web hosting business (including control panel support), so if you really don't have any preference, go with CentOS.

CentOS is also arguably more stable since it doesn't always have the latest releases and updates.

Again, both will work fine but choose whatever works the best for you.

My impression is that CentOS is more on "stable" side (less frequent updates) and Ubuntu is more on "latest" side (more frequent updates). Yet both will do the job

You can host Wordpress on both of them. However as others have mentioned CentOS is more stable and majority of hosts are using CentOS for a reason.

It's not what you use, but how you use it that ultimately matters. So if you are more comfortable and have better knowledge of using one OS over another, use that OS. A knowledgeable system admin for either CentOS or Ubuntu can tweak, tune and setup their server and LAMP/LEMP stack optimally for their needs.

I choose CentOS as that's where my area of expertise lies. I've dabbled with Debian and Ubuntu and can setup a LEMP stack from scratch. But still more confident and comfortable in my CentOS know-how to get the best out of that OS for my usage :)

I'm more of a Ubuntu fan, mostly for the fact that if you're not using cPanel, then you're not limited to Centos. Other panels work on everything whereas cPanel is limited to Centos.

But since this isn't a panel discussion, although closely related, if you're going to keep everything clean and efficient; Ubuntu, PHP7 or 5.6, Nginx, MariaDB, and Redis is a very good combination.

Vice versa, I am a fan of CentOS and I am using all Wordpress sites on Centos without any issues. I installed Ubuntu on several servers but I see that Centos is more popular and easy to configure than Ubuntu.

Personally I would say CentOS has better support for WordPress as it is more stable.

However, whichever you choose will still work well for your WordPress site.

If you want to go the Ubuntu route, I would check out Debian as an alternative as the repos are more stable and more options for support. in 99% of cases I would recommend CentOS because of the array of support available and wide usage on production machines.

There seems to be lot of paid and free support available for CentOS. I can see lot of forums and the communities already solved some common issues with the CentOS. In comparison to Ubuntu which is yet to get popular for server side. I have found that if you have just single WP install to manage, then It'd not be bad to go with either one of them. But one choice had to be made, then I'd go with CentOS. I have experience with it and that's the reason I have that bias.

The main difference is Centos is the free version of Redhat, and use the previous features of Redhat with new release.
When Debian is build and updated by a community, and Ubuntu build on top of debian with more features related to end users.
The other reason of Centos popularity is cPanel do not support other distribution.

But most of open-source apps are build for Debian/Ubuntu, especially for WordPress. All my servers are running with Plesk on Debian 8 Jessie.

Both CentOS and Ubuntu are pretty popular amongst users. If you are new to this and don't have any special requirements, go with an Ubuntu server.

CentOS is known for being stable as they update their software after testing for a longer period of time.
In terms of speed, I would say both are somewhat similar.

Both of us flavour of Linux operating system. Cent-OS is based on Red hat and Ubuntu is based on debian. Cent-OS is more secure as a comparison of Ubuntu and RHEL release more conservative updates for but Ubuntu release less conservative updates. If are you choosing OS for web hosting then Cent-OS is the best OS because of control panels compatibility. Ubuntu is good for small business and who is beginners. On other hand Cent-OS is Good For Medium size business and large sized. It is all depend on your purpose.
