Hello Gmeister4,
There are many parameter I have to know to answer :

1) What type of php site ? WordPress, another CMS, custom ?

2) More request by users to browse on the site, or more bandwith with assets delivery ?

3) What do you want to use ? A control panel or a light web server ?

If 500 users online all the time I suggest you to use 4GB RAM with a dedicated server - minimum.

Why? because a dedicated server serves only you and the 4GB RAM also helps you to update your site if you need it any time.

8GB or 16GB server will be over kill. But if you are using CLOUD HOSTING or VPS then you need it. Now you decide where you should go!

Thanks

I would like to recommend you to go with minimum 8G RAM and upgrade it, if you face any high resource usage issue and make sure that you are using higher E3 or E5 processor

Some custom sites and wordpress sites. Of course I want to use cPanel, I am familiar to this hosting panel.

I have not seen any dedicated server with 4GB of RAM.

You mean If I use a cloud hosting then I need 8GB or 16GB

Good advice!

what is exact GHz for E3 or E5 processor?

E3, or even a older L5420 processor would be fine for you. What you need the most is RAM.

Think about it:

If you have a super fast processor and a moderate amount of ram, your processor will be able to process a lot of requests as they come in.
However, the server still depends on having a adequate amount of RAM for php & MySQL to function properly.

How, if you have a lower end processor, but 8-16Gb of Ram, you can store most of your content in Cache/Ram. As requests come in, your server can serve the content from cache so reprocessing is not necessary. (Cache is ALWAYS faster then reprocessing info, which relies on CPU, disk IO, etc)

hi @Gmeister4
I would say 8GB RAM should be more than enough if you go for a stable and reliable hosting provider. As was mentioned above 16GB is over kill.

Also please consider if your wordpress theme gets messed up with php 7 you may face slower load times than you would with php 7.
As RDO mentioned also deeply look into integrate good caching system as that can heavily boost your website response time.

Luxin

if its heavy website then 4GB RAM, plus caching could be a little short of the RAM he needs.
Why everyone always recommend nginx and caching for server, do they really help to decrease loadings for webpages or hosting?

You should end up choosing a mid-point between all the recommendations here, 6GB should do the work since 4GB is just enough for 500 users, but just in case this number increases you don't have to add new memory to your servers.

Cheers
