Google adwords is the best but it costs more and i think hosting providers are hard to go with this option unless they have big budgets. The second option that will work best for hosting providers to increase sales are, using forums, easy to advertise and communicate with potential customers.

Yeah I agree with you. We have seen a lot of growing when we advertise on google. However some clicks can go up to $25 and that really does add up quickly. A good thing to do is to also ask for reviews from your current customers that way they can post on popular hosting websites like this forum.

Cost of customer acquisition is high with Google adwords.

Try giving out limited free service. This is better than spending money on advertising, which may or may not convert. Spending on resources for a free host is better IMO.
You will have to find your niche, and advertise on forums.
Hunt for customer pain points in blogs/forums, and solve them on your platform. You will have to offer extensively customized services.

The cheaper marketing strategy would be, Make your clients to talk about your host. (Existing clients)

Also add value to forums, advertise in the forums. :)

Hire a great marketing team and step up your SEO game is the obvious choice.

But also try to get involved with industry events if you can, like attending WordCamp, Cloud Expo, Ignite, etc. We always sponsor great events like WordCamp across the country at A2 Hosting. Make friends in the industry and you'll be able to get more clients through referrals.

Promotions & sales are the best methods of helping to increase your web hosting sales (that's as long as you promote it properly as well). Things like one-off discounts or special event prices can help a lot to increase sales because people want to save money.

Using forums really? I don't see how posting in web forums will help get customers when mostly users are another IT guys.... or hosting company

if you want to find easier customers with no competition you must find the non-IT business owners

more and more datacenters building every day in every city so if you are not focused about local then..... your loss :)

and referral from customer is the easiest (free) advertising

All above are very great ways to increase your sales. IMO, the best is still build up your brand, let more people to know your brand so that in the long term you will definitely gain from it. If you already have existing customer, dont forget to treat them well and understand their needs so that they stay loyal to you.

That's true for all types of businesses. When you gain customers' trust, you increase their loyalty towards your company and brand. I think the friendly attitude towards the customers, and of course, the good quality of the services that you provide are the two fundamental factors for success and gaining more customers (respectively sales).
