Hi Hugo,

First let me say you will not know how (fast) the service is before you start using it. Plenty of providers market themselves as the best and fastest but it's all marketing, I'm sure some are great but many are not. I would look for Linux or CloudLinux for the OS, SSD will give you better performance, cPanel would be my pick but Plesk is also very good.

As LJSHost mentioned above those are the desirable features, however keep in mind with shared hosting you could be shareing a server with thousands of other users. If the providers business plan includes drastic overselling of resources chances are that even with the above mentioned features the service is going to be poor. Look for providers which offer lower density of users per server, that way the server load should be lower and offer better performance.

Fast Servers can only be possible with more ram and diskspace. Now if you have multiple websites on the same server and few websites use lot of resources then your server becomes slow. As long as your website is the only account on the server where there are no other websites, then you can expect to be fast.

SSD is not everything in shared hosting. If the server / machine where your webhosting account is located at is completely overselled (too many accounts in one server) the website will still load slowly. You have to find a proper provider that cares for the performance of the websites and does not overload servers with tons of accounts.

Web server - Litespeed ( Better than Apache in terms of performance)
SSD or HDD -- SSD without any doubt. Better IO performance
Hosting control panel --- CPanel , works with above configuration.

CloudLinux offers better stability, resource allocation and account isloation. Makes shared hosting reliable. If you get Raid 10 storage, you are at the right place. Raid 10 with SSD is probably the best configuration with above details.

My personal choices are: Linux OS, Solid-state drives for better performance, and cPanel because I consider it easy to use.

Every one claim to be the best and the fastest - it's just about the experience. Also what it means "fast"? If you have a personal site with 5 pages on a overselled server it might be fast for you. If your "neighbor" on the same server has an e-commerce site or bussy blog, then for him will be the "shared plan" slow...

There is not much choice of na OS if we discuss a standard Shared Hosting. It would be CentOS (or CloudLinux). I would suggest one using NGINX or LiteSpeed web server.

SSD storage is a must if anyone wants to achieve high performance. There are some special storage area network solutions, which offer fault-tolerance. This is the best option. Alternatively a RAID 10 based storage is a preferred option.

Please also note that a HDD-based storage would offer very good performance as well. Just imagine a storage server build out of 24 SAS HDD drives at 15,000 RPM.

Choose the web hosting company who does not oversell on shared environment, such servers will always performs well then those on which overselling is done.

Correct. It really all depends on the site and per site bases however, if you go through sites hosted on the same IP and notice that a majority is slow, then it may be the servers.

Good point. The system to check if a company is "overselling" is not 100% solid and won't 100% work unless the company gives you how many people they're hosting on one server (not very likely.) Does that make sense?
