In my point of view it is important for non-designer first to realize things when buiding a new web site.
- Brainstorm for which you are going to do, write down or making a list of things. -
- Creating a wireframe.
- Bring details onto the wireframe such as colors, content, sliders, effects, images etc.

What about you? what are the best web design tips or guidelines for non-designers?

Even, if you stick with Wordpress, you still need a theme for it from a theme marketplace or design your own, so design concepts is still a matter.

Website design in not a easy thing to do. There goes a lot of efforts in website designing. Not everyone is well versed by the rule for website design. You can also use wordpress or a website designer for advanced assistance. When creating a website by an amateur person, following things he should do to acquire a set of skills needed for successful website designing-
1. List down things which you are going to execute in your website.
2. Create a structure of your website roughly.
3. Detailed and accurate information must be provided, make sure you give high quality content.
4. Keep an eye for details like size, colors, text, fonts, backgrounds.
5. Make sure you don't stick to one template, show some versatility and creative thinking.
I hope all these tips would help you out.

Keep it simple, use a framework to get started. It takes quite a long time to get an eye for design, but I guess keep trying until you are happy with what you have created :).

If you like WordPress try "JointsWP". Its built of Foundation 6 and it really is a good starting point to building out a theme.

You could get cheap premium themes from places like themeforest, but bear in mind, they are not exclusive to you

They can also cause all kinds of problems if the themes are license based, depending on how its built if they have a license server and its slow, it will also slow down your site considerably. There are just too many factors that come in to play when picking a very heavily widgeted theme with WordPress.

Another tip is to constantly look at other websites to find ideas for your own. If you find something you like, check out the element using your browser tools.

Be creative and don't copy others. Take tips from other but never copy. Make your own vision of the design and turn it as you like. If you were to learn then you have a long way ahead of you or like what the other guy said here, stick to WordPress and create your vision there

Before you start designing a website truly think about the features you want to implement and think about the layout for a bit. It would be a great idea to create a wireframe so you have a basic idea of how your site is going to be laid out.
