I'm looking for a web designer based in the US. Preferably local.

Craiglist is just the same guy posting a million ads. Reddit is good but really unorganized. Haven't looked much into odesk but I figure it's just a bunch of Indians and Filipinos.

Exactly,
You can find via forums or any freelancer websites out there, quality of website depends on who you will choose to design and your requirements. I suggested you should research carefully before hiring someone to design your website, too many web templates on the internet and some people can edit them to make a new one for you. Any demo is a must. which field do you want for your new website?

I have an idea, if you want to find a good web designer, go themeforest where their web designers' themes are approval and contact them in their profile. It's easy way but more effective to find the US web designers, also quality services.

Post a job on odesk and mention preferred location of freelancers. You will get quality freelancers on odesk. Also odesk have lot of option for filtering candidates. I still suggest you to go with odeak.

Apparently I was looking in the wrong place on craigslist. I clicked services instead of resumes and found a whole bunch of locals with nice work.

I got a contract for website redesign a few weeks ago. I had to pay $20, but I got quite a few qualified applicants from posting the job to Warrior Forum Classified ads.

I sent all of them non disclosure agreements, and now I have a rolodex of qualified designers.

It was worth the 20 bucks if you ask me.

I tried 2 freelancers from fiverr for a logo design and writing content but its quality is low. One writer from US on Freelancer gave me quality articles. So I recommend emanate try freelancer but take care on choosing people will do for you.
