Someone I know has done this and it has worked to his advantage. He runs a hosting site much like we all do on here but instead of having a forum run along side this, he uses a blog. What the blog has done was brought more attention to his actual service by offering advice. I never considered this myself until now. Does anyone on here run a blog along side their hosting company?

Many of them do. DigitalOcean's, Linode's and Vultr's documentation can be considered as a "blog", and it's what gets them the most customers.

A blog is always a good idea, but only start it if you know what to write about and how to write.

I agree. Blogs are good. But a lot of blogs are just boring with lots of words and no real informative content thinking Google is going to snatch it up just because it's a blog. If you don't find it interesting yourself nobody else will so make sure its informative and not blatantly obvious you are just trying to do the SEO thing or sell your services...

Blogs are one of the best ways to gain a good audience Period. Blogs also play a good role in fetching organic traffic to your main site.

Blogs+Social Audience will no doubt help in your overall Google Rankings.

Blogs are great self promotion tools, however content is king. You have to make sure the conent is SEO and user friendly, that way it wont be just a borring text ment for SEO purposes. And always have original content, copying material from another blog is just unprofessional.

Forums used to be good ideas, but without a consistent flow of people adding to conversations, it then becomes a quiet board where it looks like no one cares or visits it.

Blogs and offering advice through a blog works for multiple reasons.

Blogs only work if you write relevant and useful content. Its no good if you use it as a filler and populate it with thin meaningless content. In fact, anything content driving is good. Relevant and good content that is. Moz.com is a pro at doing this (no suprise). By creating tonnes of free advice, videos and self help guides, they have made a name for themselves as being the go to people for SEO... and their services too of course. It's that positive association that people place on your site.

If you take a look at the major hosting providers, you'll notice a huge bank of tutorials and self help guides...

Note, Wordpress is free, but the top-of-the-line forum software will cost you money to buy and also for renewed support. In that case, a blog could be a big advantage money wise. Also, a blog can be written by yourself. There is no need to find other writers.

Anyway, though, there are some pitfalls with a blog. For one thing, you don't have to have the best forum software. You can get a free solution that works just as well, assuming you've added appropriate mods.

I saw more people are using free forum software but I don't see any advantages of that because it lacks of features and supports if compared with paid forum software.

With the right keyword research, starting a blog and using a content marketing strategy is a great way to drive a lot of traffic and backlinks to your site and help it rank.

I remember how digital ocean started, they got lot of investment instead of burning that investment on advertisement they created blog they paid the writers in per post, I guess $50 per post. And today there blog is popular and well written. Whenever I search for server administration tutorial I prefer digital ocean because it is very well written.

I think blog and podcast can definitely add value and bring more customers to your brand. You can see that StudioPress, Rainmaker, WPEngine are actively doing the blog post series. And they also get into the podcast. So all of this does add up and help with promotion of the brand. So I think using blog for marketing is a good choice. You just have to make sure that you are promoting to the right set of people who you can make as a customer.
