I would like to run a CounterStrike server on a VPS and sharing it to a few friends, is it okay or I should better think of a dedicated server for this purpose?
Thank you in advance.

Hi McKay,

A VPS should be fine we have a lot of gaming customers, minecraft, DayZ, Terraria.
Most game servers are very light weight and just do data processing, but something like minecraft which runs on Java and has a persistent world do require at least 4GB RAM and at least 1 fast core.

A VPS is defently a good option to run a game server, unless you're planing to run several or resell game slots there is no need for a dedicated server. Just make sure the CPU clock rate is higher than your standard low-end VPS, some providers do offer virtual game servers, which technically still are VM's just with higher performance and ddos protection specially designed to mitigate attacks occuring on game servers and game ports.

would not get a dedicated server unless you have a very very heavy server.

VPS is the cheapest and most efficient way of running your game.
PM me with more info about what sort of server and I'll let you try out a VPS to see if it works.
if you have heavy users then a dedicated server with moderate configuration is suggested

to start with VPS is good.
@Luxin Host @24x7CSM If I go with a dedicated server, there are a few providers that cheaper than OVH but high quality?

I will try to check on my VPS first to see how it runs.

Most features that are available on a dedicated server are present in VPS servers. Initially hosting a game server on a VPS may seem fine but the game servers must be hosted on a dedicated server as VPS though being on an private server it is still a dedicated server partitioned using a virtualisation software. Thus better to host a game server on a dedicated server or even cloud hosting can be considered as an alternative.

Thought so , OVH is a cheaper but not support . So if you are a tech savy person you can surely move further with OVH. Regarding other cheap providers I am not sure how their support is

As a manager at GalaxyNode and a personal user of the VPS systems we offer I can personally say; Yes, a Moderate sized VPS server can function as a game server.
I would recommend a VPS with at least 6144MB RAM 60GB Storage 3 VCORES 100Mbps Connection 1TB Bandwidth.
This would suit well for hosting games like minecraft using Multicraft or Pufferpanel and can support some other games via other panels.
The OS i would recommend using on the server is CentOS7 Minimal.

Yes you can run game server on VPS server , make sure at least * GB ram and SSD , good graphics card ( at host level )and VPS should be kvm/xen vps.

My advice go with a provide who can provide vps and as well dedicated and ask for upgrade option if in case vps does not work to upgrade a dedicated.

CS would be definitely run smoothly on VPS, but if you are going to have MMO with huge amount of people playing VPS won't handle it.

Just look at the spec the games need to run as a dedicated gaming server and buy the similar speced VPS.

Sure it can! A CPU with a high clockspeed is best, such as E3's or i7's.
An SSD will be a huge boost, too. Double check you aren't getting a 10MBps port either!
