I am wondering which Whois service you guys are using :)
Is it possible to use the command line to trace Whois hosting or a domain name?

Does it have any advantages over others?
Can it see any domain info that protected by WHOIS protection?

If someone uses WHOIS protection, you will not be able to see their real info because the way the agreement works is that ICANN doesn't have the real registration data on file, because the private company that runs protection is trusted with it instead as they are authorized by ICANN. Really, any site for whois will be fine. I just like to get mine right from the source.

Whois.sc is what we use. Domains that are privacy protected, wont have their whois publicly available anywhere.

Many whois information giving websites are present, and each website has its design and look. One the whois information displaying website that I use is whois(dot)net

I'm not sure if there are any disadvantages or advantages over others but I have always used who.is myself.

Hello,

I personally use www.whois.com and www.who.is as they have good interfaces and they are easy to remember, they also have direct domain registration if I ever need it.

For hosting, I use www.WhoIsHostingThis.com which will tell you the Nameservers and the server provider, if the Nameservers aren't setup correct or they aren't custom it might show the exact host such as ns1.GoDaddy.com etc.

A thumbs up or thanks would be much appreciated, however not required. Please don't feel obligated, but I helped you the option is there :)

Best Regards,
Kieran Cairns

I use whois domainname.com simple. Because I am on linux PC, it works for me right from terminal.

You can try, if you are on Linux distro..

Syntax:

whois <domainname.com>

Replace the domain name with your target domain and remove those symbols. Simple.

Hope this helps you. Works fine for all publicly available whois information.
