I had not used ISPconfig before today. I installed Webmin on my CentOS VPS but it required time and configurations. It sounds like I need to be a hosting expert to control this hosting panel, if I am understanding correctly. What are the pros and cons of WebMin vs ISPConfig? Which one is better and why?

Your inputs are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Webmin like ISPConfig are very advanced control panel, which require for both of them, a good knowledge in server configuration and setup.
For web hosting, you should try Virtualmin, which include webmin.
I prefer ISPConfig, but like any other free control panel, there are a lot of configuration to do, before being able to use them for web hosting.
VestaCP is easier to install and to use in my opinion.

I would say ISPconfig is a much more polished piece of software. Just comparing the 2 now it really looks like ISPconfig would be the easier of the 2 to use if you are not that familiar with maintaining a linux server.

It looks to me line ISPconfig is for running a hosting company - you create user accounts, can manage multiple servers, etc. Webmin is more just a web interface for running a linux server, it lets you monitor processes etc for the server itself. There are various other products that do other parts of the admin work, eg. Usermin(manage users on the server), Virtualmin (manage virtual hosts) etc.

I tried to check pricing for ISPconfig but I could not find a place for this on their site.
Are ISPconfig and Webmin free hosting panel? but why ISPconfig is better? I want to use ISPconfig for small websites, that would be a great choice?
In my opinion, I only need a free panel which consumes less RAM or server resource, easy to use, load fast and less configurations because I don't have more experience on that.

cPanel is most popular and easiest to use. However, I know of a new one now called ISPSystem which is cheaper that you may like. I only know about it because owner contacted me on LinkedIn about it. I must admit, it does look good.

I've never setup a VPS before and I am looking to setup my first and I am looking at different control panel options. These are two that I have seen mentioned a lot but I am concerned that they might be to advanced for someone new to set them up.

Should I just avoid these two panels until I know more about server setup or are there any good tutorials that I can find?

If this is your first VPS, I suggest going with cPanel as it's the most popular and widely used. You can get yourself a cheap cPanel licence from BuycPanel.com and use coupon code "goog13xtra" to get the licence for $13.95/month rather than the usual $14.95/month. Or, it can work out cheaper to get an internal cPanel licence directly from the provider offering the unmanaged VPS, if the provider offers cPanel licences.

But if you must use free control panel, then I'm not sure as I never use free control panel, not on production. Free is fine for testing stuff.

I thought you should recommend Plesk or Directadmin to someone if they have first VPS because these paid control panels are more cheaper than cPanel. WHM/cPanel requires more configurations manually on first step while those panels you can use and setup websites on them after installed.

I recommended ISPConfig have used a good time, and gave a good results when set up, because is full of choices, not as heavy and with a simple script installation can do everything you need easier. I remember having created a script for installing ISPConfig, I'll look on my hard drive, when you find what you step, this will save a lot of time.

Thanks for your advice, I will try to look into this control panel. I have not tried ISPConfig more like I used Webmin, this control panel as I said, it is hard to use thus I left it and finding better alternatives for free option. Some guys recommended me to use Web centos panel but I have no more experience on this hosting panel too.

I agree with CaygriWEB because I installed both VestaCP and Webmin and obviously VestaCP is easier to manger and setup configurations.
For Webmin I had to install extra Virtualmin module and it is pretty hard to configure this.

Webmin and ISPConfig are both popular web-based control panels that allow you to manage your VPS or dedicated server. Here are some pros and cons of each:

Webmin:
Pros:
  • Feature-rich: Webmin offers a wide range of modules that allow you to manage various aspects of your server, including user management, DNS, firewall, and more.
  • Highly customizable: You can customize the interface and add modules as needed.
  • Good for advanced users: Webmin is well-suited for experienced users who are familiar with server administration and want a high level of control over their server.
Cons:
  • Steep learning curve: Webmin has a complex interface and requires some knowledge of server administration to use effectively.
  • May be too complex for some users: The interface can be overwhelming for those who are new to server administration or who just want a simple control panel.
ISPConfig:
Pros:

  • User-friendly interface: ISPConfig has a clean, intuitive interface that makes it easy to manage your server, even for those with limited experience.
  • Great for hosting providers: ISPConfig is designed for hosting providers, with features specifically geared toward managing multiple clients and hosting packages.
Cons:
  • Less flexible: ISPConfig has a more limited feature set compared to Webmin, and is not as customizable.
  • Not as feature-rich: ISPConfig focuses more on simplicity and ease of use, rather than offering a wide range of advanced features.
In conclusion, Webmin is a good choice for experienced users who want a high level of control and customization, while ISPConfig is better suited for hosting providers and less experienced users who want a more user-friendly interface. Both panels have their pros and cons, and the best choice for you will depend on your specific needs and level of expertise.

Hello MotionGrafika,

WebMin
and ISPConfig are both great options for web hosting control panels. They both have their pros and cons, so it really depends on your needs as to which one is better for you.

Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. It is an excellent option for those who are looking for an easy-to-use control panel. It has a clean and simple interface that makes it easy to find your way around. It also comes with many features, including support for multiple languages, databases, and more. However, it doesn't offer as many features as ISPConfig. However, it can be a bit overwhelming for beginners.

ISPConfig is a free open-source control panel application for Linux servers that allows website owners to easily administer their sites, similar to cPanel and Plesk. It also allows resellers to manage multiple accounts on multiple physical or virtual servers. Moreover, ISPConfig is a more comprehensive control panel that offers a wider range of features than Webmin. It includes support for email, FTP, DNS, and more. It also has a more complex interface that may be confusing for some users. However, its extra features may be worth the learning curve for those who need them. However, it doesn't have as many features and options as WebMin.

Here's a quick rundown of the pros and cons of both Webmin and ISPConfig:

WebMin Pros:

  • It has a more user-friendly interface
  • More documentation and community support are available
  • Generally considered more stable and reliable
WebMin Cons:
  • Can be more resource intensive than ISPConfig
  • It does not offer as many features as ISPConfig

ISPConfig Pros:
  • Offers more features and customization options than WebMin
  • More lightweight and efficient than WebMin
  • Can manage multiple servers from one control panel
ISPConfig Cons:
  • Documentation and community support can be lacking
  • The interface can be less user-friendly

Ultimately, there is no clear winner. It depends on your needs and preferences. If you're looking for an easy-to-use control panel with a wide range of features, Webmin is a great choice. If you need a more comprehensive control panel with extra features, ISPConfig may be a better option.

ISPConfig and Webmin are both good web-based control panels.

User Interface: ISPConfig has a more modern and user-friendly interface compared to Webmin, which has a more basic and utilitarian interface.

Features: ISPConfig has more features out-of-the-box, including support for multiple languages, email autoresponders, and built-in support for popular content management systems like WordPress. Webmin is more focused on system-level tasks like user and group management, file management, and package management.

Ease of use: ISPConfig is generally easier to use imho, especially for beginners. The intuitive interface and helpful documentation make it easier for users to understand and manage their server. Webmin, on the other hand, can be more challenging for beginners due to its less user-friendly interface and more technical focus.

Community: Both ISPConfig and Webmin have active and supportive communities.

They are both good, personally prefer ISPconfig
