For paid ones, I would recommend Xenforo, vBulletin, IP Board, Woltlab Burning Board

There are many comparisons between these forum software(s)

https://forumweb.hosting/13899-vbulletin-vs-xenforo.html
https://forumweb.hosting/505-vbulletin-vs-xenforo-which-is-better.html
https://forumweb.hosting/9626-xenforo-vs-ipb-vs-vbulletin.html

For free ones, I would recommend using phpBB, bbPress, mybb

https://forumweb.hosting/11351-mybb-vs-phpbb-vs-smf-which-one-is-better-for-building-a-forum.html

hope you find enough information to start a new forum for yourself.

Good luck to you!

The best forum is the one that is best for you! Sorry I can't give you a definite answer, but the best thing is to demo them and see which one meets your needs.

No mate! it is vB4 and It has many customizations that no one else has.
For example, we could need to pay $1900 for creating a page like the homepage of this forum :) it's reason why it has many advantages than default theme/settings from vB4/5

If you have vB4 license, you should try vB5 but if you want more secure, you should go with Xenforo. Though, for whatever forum software (vB or Xenforo) you still need more improvements for them to make them better, no forum software is the best for SEO (to get more organic traffic) if you don't change or improve them.

Wow, I thought it was vB5 due to it looking modern/fresh.

I have a vBulletin 4 licence but don't use it and was considering to upgrade it from vB4 to vB5 but it'd cost $200 to upgrade the licence, well forget that! I was going to setup a web hosting forum, but there's no need as there are already plenty of them around. ForumWebHosting is the best one around, at least regarding design wise, friendlessness. ForumWeb.Hosting is a great forum that has lots of potentials.

I wonder which forum software is best for mobile devices!?

If you are having vBulletin 4 licence, you can install vB4 or vB5 without paying for upgrading. Where do you hear from for this " it'd cost $200 to upgrade the licence"?

You can go for IP board or Xenforo, they run fine on mobile devices because its themes are responsive, I am also having forums running with Xenforo. It's a good forum cms, more secure and good features.

I attached pictures. When I click on "Upgrade/Renew" button it takes me to page where I would have to pay $209 to upgrade vB4 to vB5 - I think that is right?

Seem your license was too old and you have bought it since many years ago and it only includes vB4 licence.

My license was vB5 connect which included vB4/vb3.

Ok. I purchased mine back in 2006.

My Orders.png

It shows invoices as

2006: vBulletin Forum 3 = $68.98
2007: vbforum_leasedupgrade = $218
2008: vBulletin Forum 3 = $40.50 (probably updates/support)
2012: vbsuite_upgrade = $350

And now they want to charge me an additional $209, so I could upgrade from vB4 to vB5 Connect or $359.00 for vB5 Connect + Mobile Suite Bundle

I also wasted money on that vbSEO stuff many years ago because they shut shop! I haven't had much luck with vBulletin as a customer. I like how it works on popular sites, but it seems to cost a fortune to upgrade, etc which makes me think why should I bother when there are so many free ones around that are just as good now.

I sent message to vBulletin

Hi,

How come I have to pay so much money to upgrade to vB5 Connect with the mobile suite. I've spent around $650 on vB 3/4 when it wasn't that good at all. Surely I can have free upgrade given I've already paid $650, and I already helped test the not so good versions and provide lots of feedback etc. I also wasted money on vbSEO, though I know that was not a product of your own. I'd like to setup a new community.

I mentioned this at https://forumweb.hosting/14218-best...ily-discussion-website.html?p=85676#post85676

What can you do to help me here?

Chris

@fwh how come you choose to use vB4 over vB5? Do you prefer vB4? If so, what do you not like about vB5?

I used to run a music forum and was thinking of relaunching it under vBulletin 5 or some other free forum software?

Thanks!

Of course I am using vB4 then I prefer vB4, vB5 has somethings I don't like.
But if you're starting a new forum, you should choose vB5, it will not require you many improvements like on vB4. You need to check and comparing carefully between vB4 and vB5 before choosing one which is best for your requirements..

vBulletin is so aggravating to me I stopped using it after vb2 I just find other software easier to use.
Exactly, nowadays, there any many new forum cms and they are really good. I would google this to find out which is the best for us.

For anyone interested in upgrading any old vBulletin 4 licenses to vBulletin 5 Connect or vBulletin Connect + Mobile Suite, you can use the code "50OFFVB" to receive $50 discount. I think the code expires on 31st December 2016 and so you'd need to be quick. That discount is on top of the discount automatically applied which also may end soon. So you can save around $100 if you do it now. It could cost you a lot more to upgrade later.

I upgraded an old vB4 licence that I had, though I did not bother with the Mobile Suite as not interested in the Apps side of it going by research. vBulletin 5 Connect is responsive which is what matters.

Hope that helps.
