It is hard if you want to start your hosting business without money, unless you have a big site with huge traffic then you can start a simple hosting site where offering hosting plans there. The simplest way is drive traffic from that site to your hosting site and convert it into customers, so you will have a stable revenue without spending more on advertising or maintaining it.

You can start your business with small invest. If you want to sell webhosting, start with a good VPS (10$ a month). And if you want to sell VPS, there is some cheap dedicated server like soyoustart. I have sold VPS few years ago with only an OVH dedicated server which cost 60$ a month.

I agree with this idea, start with a small website and with small budget, when you have enough money, you can invest to grow and expand your business.

This is really good advice. Crawl before you walk.

You can also provide other services related to the hosting industry like website design, graphics design, script writing and troubleshooting, and consulting based on your knowledge. Many of those can be outsourced where you perform as the manager/consultant of hosting services. Whatever knowledge you bring to the table is potentially marketable.

You can also become an affiliate of a good hosting provider, which would give you the opportunity to earn while you learn more about the various opportunities in the hosting industry.

@Wesley
for selling VPS OVH does have the cheapest good quality dedicated servers however their support is the worst.
if you are looking just to sell VPS and can keep up with the 60$ a month cost for 6 month at least then go for it. (be sure you have the skills to set things up or you and your customers will face a lot of issues)
if you want a much cheaper alternative you can always use a reseller plan. Resellers have very strong servers behind them and extra features. you can also resell VPS using reseller plans.
I wrote a complete article about this. read here: https://forumweb.hosting/13169-reseller-vs-vps-dedicated-(explained).html

Well that's the pain every startup has. Banks do not entertain in such conditions as well. In my personal opinion, if you have money, you can start any business, if not, even good idea's will not help.

If it's a great idea, I'm sure you can find an investment. If it's good and not great, you can start as a reseller and work your up. Seen it done.

I would highly discourage starting a web hosting business with little capital. You would be doing a disservice to your customers because you simply won't be able to sustain a stable business. What you could do, if you have the skills, is pick up some freelance work, build up your funds, then look into web hosting down the road. Good luck!

For me, a big capital is not needed. But a realistic business plan is required. You can start with small resources, if you have properly done your hosting package, you should not provide a bad hosting service. I'm not sure a customer will have a lower service if his website is hosted on a VPS with 30 other websites, instead of being on a dedicated with 500 websites.

For the VPS it's the same, you don't need to deploy OpenStack to offer a good ratio performances/price.

My personal philosophy is that reseller hosting and plans are not a good way to go about running a hosting business for a couple reasons.

1. You have no control over server configuration and settings. Thus you can't cater to your customers needs, and also won't be able to fix issues yourself
2. Your support quality is somewhat reliant on the support quality of your hosting provider
3. If you can't spend at least $50 - $100 on a server, I quite frankly feel bad for your customers. If only they knew that their provider barely has any more money to spend on their hosting company, than they have to spend on a hosting plan!

1)I'm not talking about reseller hosting, It's clearly not a solution to provide a good service.
But to start a web hosting, you can start with a VPS (unmanaged) and host only 30 or 40 domains on it.

2) Yes that's the big problem with reseller hosting

3) If you are doing the job properly, a basic web hosting package is the same hosted on a VPS or on a dedicated server. It could be a good web hosting if it's not oversold and properly managed

You can learn to use third party resources. Gain small different profit by becoming reseller. When you accumulate few customer, then only upgrade yourself to rent machine and manage it by your own. Follow upgrade your self again with purchase own server and host at data center.

You get a job and save up, or you learn how to do what needs to be done so you don't have to pay for it. Anything is achievable if you set your mind to it.

If you have a good idea but no money to invest, then borrow money from your family or banks, if your plans have got potential to earn more money then they are ready to invest with you.

Just don't do it.
It is a great idea to become a worker in any company or becoming a freelancer if you don't have money to invest or afraid of doing somethings you think it is good to start with but no money.

Agreed, this is one of ways that more people did if they didn't have money to invest at the starting point.

In my opinion first you purchase a Reseller plan from any hosting company and start reselling it. When you feel that you have enough money with you then start thinking to buy a VPS then to dedicated server.

I am sorry because I know I am going to come off very rudely here, but honestly come on. You can't seriously be advising the OP to grab a reseller plan from ANY company and just sell the accounts like that bam! Your done... I'm going to assume they were poorly chosen words? :rolleyes2:

If someone have a master idea about web hosting business and really want to do some big things in hosting field, Then He should prepare a business model or business presentation for the investors and start searching investors in web hosting forums, there are plenty of forums for the web hosting business and you can open thread on the forums so people can contact you and you can present your business model to them for a good amount of investment. You need to careful while dealing with your idea presentation in front of people because there are lots of idea thief in the market. So in every step, you need attention while dealing with people/parites. If you found someone who is ready to invest /to participate in your business model. Then I suggest you go with legal documents for the proposal to go further with the person you are dealing with. Having safe side is always a better option in terms of business. :)
