What do you think to about renting a shared or a hard drive to store your files or data? where the only activity would be a daily or weekly transfer of the backups from your VPS to the backup hard drive/server? is that a good solution? It would mean I need to set up the main VPS to send the backups to the new server, is that possible?

You can do this, and a lot of people do. The hard part (not hard, but often overlooked) is making sure that you are actually making the backups.

Do you have a way to automate the process, or are you relying on remembering to do it each week?

My suggestion would be to use R1Soft to make automated incremental daily backups to either your other server, or using a hosted R1Soft solution.

Whats your budget and let me know the backup size, so I can provide you good solution instead of such lengthy process for simple backup.

I heard about this tool R1Soft but I could not find on my hosting. Where is it located?

You can use backup-manager for that.
And to store your backup use hubic, there is an linux app to send files from linux.

Your on a VPS right? If so, you would need to purchase a R1Soft license and install it on your server. You can ask your hosting provider for help.

If your on shared hosting, this would not be an option and you would have to backup via FTP.

If you are managing your VPS with WHM / cPanel - we use:

https://www.siteautobackup.com

They can do just cPanel backups or full WHM multiple domain backups.

But if you are able to use R1Soft that is great choice, above does not require any install / offsite cloud based. But you do have to be running cPanel or WHM

I am wanting to know about pricing of R1Soft. Is it expensive?

@leto12 and @MailEdge, is it secure for our files or information when using apps or websites to do backups on our site?

I am thinking about commands to backup files via ssh. That will be much better.

This is very possible and there are many services in place such as R1Soft which take care of that for you.
In regards to using shared hosting as storage, make sure you check the TOS before ordering as many Hosting companies do not allow storage on their shared hosting plans.
An ideal situation is where your hosting provider provides of site backups. e.g. we take daily backups for no charge so do many other hosting providers.
If I didn't answer your question please let me know.

are there any alternatives to shared or VPS for backup files or where to store my data more secure? should I find services like google drive or online storage service?

I saw this feature on more web hosting plans but when I used their service, I even don't know how to do or where they will put my backup files.

On some shared hosting plans I tried and it alerted error. May be my file sizes are too big.

They are services dedicated to storing your files however I do not know of any that are automatic except the expensive ones such as R1Soft.

R1Soft is not so simple to set up for everyone however they have great service and backup locations.
I recommend getting your main hosting whether its VPS or Shared with a hosting provider whom has daily backups.
These backups can be restored from Cpanel or some other admin panels. if not create a ticket and they should be able to restore files as long as they have R1Soft and you meet their requirements (e.g. the length of time your files are backed up for, etc.)
