Is it possible to make an ecommerce website without having to know coding and in an extremely cost effective manner? What platform would you recommend to use?

I would recommend WordPress and Woocommerce, easy to get your store online fast with no coding.
Woocommerce is quite extensive, I suggest you read the documentation.

My vote goes with Magento and Opencart and you can get some basic support if you have a shared hosting as they may be able to help you to debug with any possible issues which you can end up in a adding plugins / extensions etc and making it faster using any caching methods etc.

For the majority of bloggers there doesn't seem to be a need for anything more complicated than Wordpress and Woocommerce. Custom solutions seem to be for larger companies.

Yes, It's possible using most popular CMS like WordPress. You can use a free or paid Ecommerce theme and can create your own ecommerce website without any expert coding knowledge.
