For me, the first signs of bad web hosting, is the excessive usage of technical words like if they are trying to sell something to look younger ...
And the "huge warning" is when I see the prices like : normally $155 $99/mo****

*****Promotional pricing is for the first term only and regular rates apply upon renewal

Current bad reviews are a good sign you should stay away. Pricing that is way to cheap is also a no go for me, I often see offers for 0.40 per month, I mean seriously :ranting_w:
Good luck building a business with those revenue levels. As I've said many times in other similar threads, you only know what your service will be long term once you have used it for at least a few months. I must disagree with Underhost's comment about private whois, this is not a sign imo that a host should be avoided. Many providers go private to prevent spam and junk mail.

These are the bad signs that you should be taking care when looking for a web hosting companies.

1)Long waiting time for customer support when trying to contact them before purchasing their hosting.
2)When they promise to give you Unlimited with hidden terms.
3) Very bad uptime, speed, response time.

However, you have to do extensive research for understanding all these aspects of a web hosting company.

A) 100% Uptime guarantee
B) Unlimited everything
C) Sneaky pricing cheme

"1)Long waiting time for customer support when trying to contact them before purchasing their hosting."
Wrong, anything related to presale questions is handed by Sales department which is NOT related to how good is an service and Technical support.

"LJSHost Current bad reviews are a good sign you should stay away."
As an hosting provider your self you should know that there are 4 types of reviews:
- Fake possitive
- Fake negative
- Paid
- Real reviews

Only newbies (fools) would look on online reviews

Indeed. Fake, Real, Paid etc reviews are such a mess no one should ever trust them. Like I always say just buy a month and make your own review.

In response again to the OP in regard to " signs bad web hosting "

In today market is a minefield the bad hosts who have no idea what they doing, couldn't give a hoot about customer service and only see the money make up a decent percentage of the industry.

Thanks to no regulation every man and his dog can start a hosting firm with a few clicks of a mouse, people still seem to believe the dream that web hosting is fast and easy money when nothing is further from the truth. These days anyone under or around £5 a month would give me immediate red flags, I really don't think customers look into operating costs to provide a quality service and to turn a small profit but don't worry about that so many are offering unlimited 4 datacenters world wide and true 24/7 qualified redhat support :p for $1.50 a month it must be the normal price right ? /sarcasm off

These guys suck up profits from all of us and are little more than scams.

If you have every signed up for EIG branded hosts such as Arvixe, Hostgator then you know most of the signs of bad host. They outsource their support to third party companies. And giving server access to them can be bad. Many hostgator sites got hacked due to these reasons. Shared hosting often suffers from the CPU throttling issue. And some hosts are also overselling the features and have too many websites hosted on slow servers. I think these are surely bad signs.

For me the sign of a bad web hosting is the bad customer service, I believe that the customer service should be available 24 hours a day, there should be many as well, even in holidays they should be available, so if anyone faces any problem while browsing, there should be someone to help them.

Bad hosting service in my opinion are don't have decent customer support and have issues with their uptime and such. Though you can't tell without trying them out. So I suggest you do extensive research on checking out the web host first and see their reviews from legit clients on reputable forums or sites.

I consider not reliable a hosting company that has bad technical support, no uptime and money-back guarantee. That has too low or too high prices, which do not correspond to the features of the plan. Also, if they do not show all plan features, which means you are not completely sure what you should pay for. I also don't like when they promise to give you unlimited or unmetered features, and after that you learn this is under certain conditions and terms. Some have hidden taxes (like setup fees or showing prices without VAT), which is also a serious sign of a bad web host.

How can you know before purchasing a service if technical support will always answer quickly and help you if needed ?
That's the same for uptime or money-back "guarantee".
Prices are not good way to know if the service is reliable, and you can only compare prices between providers, not really estimate how much the service cost.

Excessive discounts and advertising, and very high commissions on affiliates program are a better indicator to see if a company just want to make money, or if they also provide hosting service.

Prices displayed without VAT doesn't mean "bad service" , if the most part of visitors are professionals.

In current market there are so many host and so much different verity of them to choose from that, to see if a host is bad the best way is to check it for yourself. There are signs to consider when choosing host to see if it's bad, as many of you guys mentioned support is great indicator for that. I do not agree that low price should be a sign for bad hosting however, in high competitive market host do what they can and try every viable marketing move to get a head of others. If someone is starting out and wants attract costumers it's quite common to go for $ 1 per month, to use that commercially.

This business is more about service (with human hands) and less about hardware, cables and drives.
Hardware is important but if the guy that gives you support is not there, forget it. It's better you move on!

Some hosts try to trick you, they give a very small price for hosting. When you join, the very next month they will ask for high fees, when you ask them they will say that was just a promotional pricing.
Some hosts have very low cost first year hosting fees, however, they never tell you will have to pay higher fees for renewals.
Some hosts never reply your ticket or take a week to reply your ticket.
They also don't give you 99 percent uptime or the right bandwith.
I have dealt with all of these bad hosts.

Good web hosting is always in high demand but sometimes hosting company couldn't satisfy their customers and this leads to make them unhappy. Following are the signs of the bad web hosting:

1. Too Much Downtime
2. Poor Customer Service
3. Slow Load Times
4. Poor Security
5. Lack Of Features

I think the first signs of it are their poorly designed website itself! Just by looking at it you would understand it's made by a totally unprofessional guy who just need some quick buck with minimal investment. Then comes the customer support part. If they won't answer your queries within a couple of days(some big companies maybe saturated with queries so it's better to give them at least 2 days to reply), it's bad. Finally the current trend in most of the marketing sites is to include a live chat. For some odd reasons I don't trust one without a live chat. Although beware of the chat bots though.
