Hello everyone, I'm not a freelance web developer but I would start it in the near future to earning extra money online. But I am getting confused with works or web projects type which don't match my need to add them to my portfolio because of clients modifications and requirements, so how to build a strong portfolio in this case?

One of the best ways (if you want to sell your time in freelancing) is to look at actual jobs on oDesk or Freelancer, even People Per Hour, and actually do the jobs that are on there. You'll find out quickly what kind of work is in demand. You'll be doing work that people are regularly paying for. You may only need to do 5 or 10 of these for free.

Another site which you can use is fiverr.com which is a recent one. You need to showcase all your qualification in your portfolio and resume and once you send your quote / apply for a work in freelance sites, you can attach your detailed Resume as well where you can mention everything.

Main thing to get work is the rate at which you are starting your works , and most important thing is positive reveiws from clients. Even if you work for some clients free of cost, please make sure you collect reviews from the clients for sure. That will be helping you the most in getting more and more works

Nixtree, that's another good point - collecting reviews, which I forgot to mention. I should add that collecting reviews should be done whether they pay or not.

Remember that 75% of your business activity isn't paid for. You earn your living off the ladder 25.

Hi Ferdie

In your position I would offer design cheap (very cheap), sure you won't make any decent money from it but those customers will give you the portfolio you want and happy customers that will refer. After this is done then slowly start increasing your costs at a slow enough rate it's not a big difference to the next customer and so on until you get to your ideal pricing.

I think it's just crazy enough to work :D

offer heavy discount, you may also offer complimentary work for a limited number of designs with general terms of extended timeline as you may not be able to finish work on time with more orders.

your todays work as time is an investment for tomorrows returns which you will provide to the buyers in future

Hey friend,

Best advise will be to first try getting yourself as much developer jobs as possible and for everyone try getting a review from
The client, whilst at the same time remain social and try engaging well with others on social media, attend a lot of networking events in person where you can share your portfolio with others..

Remember word of mouth is the best marketing in the world and it's absolutely FREE!!

Best of luck!!
