Programming is a passion and its a creation of your own skill. Creating a program or just editing a certain feature in a program for your needs is basically the most effective way for a more convincing result. Most programmers add a feature or an event on a program because they want features or commands to behave the way they like. Most programmers tend to personalize their work base on their personality, and i think its a good thing...
Lastly i love programming because of the ability to create and the knowledge on how a program works.

But in all seriousness, programming makes you like some kind of god, you have complete control over any task, and anything you can imagine you could make it true or at least simulate it, you can make entire (virtual) worlds.

It extends capacity of your brain and helps you develop yourself to the max.
Some people spend a lot of time on computers and they got themselves pretty familiar with how they work and gave it a shot.
It is, of course, paid well in a technology based society and you can make a career out of it.
Also, a lot of people like to invent things and be the ones who created something new.I would be proud if I created a program or an app that a lot of people use since it will give you popularity in something that you do for fun and make you some money.
