See, web design is a creative process, it needs lot of research and development with lot of changes in advancements like html 5 and css3.

Yes, it is good to do planning and researching before starting work, because planning and research is the first step. If you do proper planning and researching then you will know what is the importance and you will know each project is different from another. It is the planning of making any website better from another.

NO, Not at all, Today web design has to be more of quality content:
1. proper and simple images that are relevant.
2. easily readable and informative content
3. more pages with in depth information.
4. proper social network linking
5. Full fledged business pages on g+, facebook, twitter, pinterest: verified as per their guidlines.
6. relevant videos with proper structuring .
