VPS: Linux or Windows?

I've read many opinions about both, Linux and Windows VPSes and I created an opinion that Linux OS is way better than windows vps server. (Taking into consideration control panels to choose from).

Am I wrong? Can someone comment on this question? What are your opinions?

From my personal experience, they both are almost the same. The biggest difference I can see right now is pricing, Linux OS are cheaper than Windows due to licensing.

If you're just starting your web business and you have no idea about the Windows/Linux difference for VPS, you should take into consideration a few details:

• on what programming language your site is created?
  If it's, e.g., PHP then you better go with Linux server, if it's ASP.NET then you don't have another alternative but Windows.
• What database do you use?
  If it's MySQL than you can go either with Windows or Linux, but if its MS MySQL than it'll be only Windows.
• If you don't have any questions with software now, another detail is price. Linux servers are much cheaper because of the Windows license cost.

It depends on which platform you want to develop your website. Linux Hosting is compatible with PHP and MySQL database. On the other hand, Windows-specific technologies such as ASP, .NET, and MSSQL compatible with Windows Hosting.

These two hosting offers the same level of proficiency. So the hosting service you select significantly depends on technologies that your website needs. Linux is an open-source system. So most of the sites are now hosted on Linux Server due to its affordable price and flexibility. Linux servers and software can be easily modified, and you don't have to wait for a new version.

Windows servers and software generally have more features than open-source. Windows servers come with a Remote Desktop, which is a more natural way to manage a server. Linux is open source OS whereas Windows OS is commercial. Linux has access to source code and alters the code as per user need whereas Windows doesn't have access to source code ... Linux supports a good sort of free software's than windows but windows have an out sized collection of computer game software.

Linux hosting is best for php based websites and windows hosting is best for asp.net based websites.
you can run php based websites on windows hosting as well as linux server , we will prefer to choose linux web hosting for php based sites.
Linux servers are having less cost , due to windows license servers will be costly than linux servers.

if you have php based sites and application linux server will be best and if you have asp.net based application or site windows server is option.

As per my understanding, Linux Hosting is comparatively cheap and comes with good user-friendly cPanels compared to windows hosting.

It is very dependant on the needs. Since there is no insight on goals or application usage. It is hard to make that call. If you are hosting web apps, websites, etc Linux might be the best fit.

If however the goal is Exchange, MS SQL, RDP server and other Microsoft centric applications, Windows VPS might be a better fit.

In most cases, it is necessary to ask what needs to be done and what tools will be used to accomplish those tasks or goals. It is possible that Linux might be the answer or Windows VPS, or both. While in the office most of our solutions are Microsoft based, the web for us is primarily Linux based. Before that choice can be made it is important to know what needs to be done and pick the tool or tools that best fit.
