Chris - There are many things you can do with a Dedicated Server. Host VPN, Create Virtual Servers, Host Games Servers, Install cPanel and have Shared Hosting & Reseller Plans. The possibilities are endless with a dedicated server and you should do whatever interests you. When I opened my Web Hosting business in 2010, I had 1 dedicated server as well (Colocation) to be exact. I went the Shared Hosting and Reseller services route and now i have 50+ Dedicated Servers in Colocation and around 1,500 Virtual Servers provisioned. Follow your heart :).

The only difference between a Dedicated Server and a VPS is a VPS is hosted on a Dedicated Server utilizing services like Hyper V, VMWare, SolusVM and Virtualizor.

Good luck!

Hi.

On the dedicated server you will get more more performance from resources, especially CPU and disk, cause on the VPS CPU and iops is usually divided between all user of the hypervizor.

A dedicated Server Hosting is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs of the network. E.g, some networks require that one computer is set aside to manage communications between all the other computers. A dedicated server could also be a computer that manages printer resources.

You can do a lot with your dedicated server:-
  • Website Hosting. When it comes to uses for a dedicated server, website hosting tops the list.
  • Game Server Hosting.
  • Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
  • Data Syncing.
  • Communication Services.
  • Install Cpanel.
  • There are endless things you can do with dedicated server.

Hi @Chris! With a dedicated server, you can set up multiple VPSes, e.g. with open source tool VirtualBox, you can make your own game server, a backup server or video-streaming server. Also, you can host traffic-loaded websites, for example, some e-commerce resources and it will be with high performance and with fast transactions. You can configure it according to your desires and requirements and improve your administrative skills. Best of luck and a Happy New Year!

The possibilities are endless with a dedicated server. It depends on your intention.

1. You can setup multiple websites to host videos and earn some PPC revenues from it.
2. You can setup VPNs and sell your services to those who need it
3. You can also deploy virtualization technology and create multiple VPS and sell the VPS
4. Use it as a backup server
5. Sell reseller hosting to web design companies
& many many more.

Dedicated Server is a complected in managing and handling. So learn about managed and unmanaged service. I suggest you to buy managed it is the best way to handle it. In mangaed plan you web hosting company will be responsible for your server and you get freedom from server issue and focus on your website.

Last advise - you should think about Cloud hosting.

Hey,

If you're really fascinated to switch to the dedicated server, I suggest you first know the basics of the dedicated server plan resources such as a number of CPU cores you might need for good performance, how much RAM you require and the storage amount.

Also, the key difference between the VPS and Dedicated server are the restrictions placed on who can use the server resources. In VPS, the multiple numbers of websites share the server resources present on the single physical server, however, dedicated server resources are fully dedicated and allows full control over the server resources to fulfill your requirement without having to face much trouble.

In addition, you can do a lot using dedicated server such as host game servers, increase site load speed and performance, create several resellers and shared hosting plans to run your own business, gain high security, will be able to handle the high upsurge in traffic and many more.

Hope you find it useful!

Regards

The question of he original thread is appalling. it is the same with this one "If I have a new one, what thing i should do with a dedicated server?"

Honestly, if you can turn a dedicated server into a toaster, this will probably make a lot of investors to listen and hopefully support your project. Part from any exotic forms of use of physical servers, in most scenarios, they work the same way as the virtual ones. You get oS installed and take from there.

It depends on what product you are using now - managed dedicated server or unmanaged dedicated server.

If you are using managed then you should not worry because your service provider will maintain and take your burden.
but if you are using unmanaged then you have to work for you.
it also depend on what features you are using.

If you`re a developer then you can use it to deploy server instances on demand in a self service manner. You can automate your application development, seperate your data from the application and focus on getting everything automated.

If non of that made any sense to you then you`re probably a slightly confused website operator who is familiar with running thier wordpress blog or phpBB forum on a shared hosting platform and someone told you to get a dedicated server and then left you hanging when you went from a managed environment to an unmanaged environment,

You should be aware about server management as it requires heavy skill set to effectively manage a server.

Adrian

See there is any rocket science with a dedicated server. yes, you should follow all the process to create your website on a new dedicated server and enables all the required settings. like, apply SSL to make your URL secure, create a backup file, and use all the advanced features for your website which are given with dedicated resources.

There are lots of things you can do with a dedicated server. Having a Dedicated server is having your physical server. You can also get lots of choices in it, like Hardware choice, cPanel choice, and Choice of RAM size.

Following are the things you can do with a dedicated server:

1. Host a game server.

2. Secure your sensitive data.

3. You can scale your business.

4. Sell unused servers and make money from that.

5. Host an e-commerce site or business application hassle-free.

6. Host streaming platforms.

7. You can protect your server against vulnerabilities.

8. create a communication site.

9. You can host your web analytics service.

10. Host communication services.

11. You can split the dedicated server into VPS and sell it.

Dedicated hosting gives you your own server where VPS hosting works on a virtual shared server. In VPS, you host your website alongside others. When you get high traffic, you need to update your VPS server into a Dedicated server.

You may host websites, communication systems, private information sync services, and even your own web analytics server. In the first place, you have the option to host your own web analytics server.

I would say the main difference in things that a dedicated server can do that VPS cannot do would be hosting VPS servers. You can install a hypervisor on the dedicated server to create VPS which cannot be done on VPS servers.
