Hi everyone, When I check a VPS server offer, I am confusing about intel processors i3, i5 and i7.
Can you say what is the difference between these three?

Thanks in advance.

Hello @Maxoq, here the difference between i3, i5 and i7 (simplified because there are i5 CPU with 6 cores on the latest Intel CPU generation ):

- i3 CPU = 2 cores + hyperthreading (2 physical cores + 2 logical cores )
- I5 CPU = 4 cores
- i7 CPU = 4 cores + HT (4 physical cores + 4 logical cores )

But I'm not sure to understand how a VPS provider can use i3 or i5 CPU on their host servers.

Actually Coffee Lake is the following
i3, 4 cores no HT
i5 6 cores no HT
i7 6 cores 12 threads

edit: whoops didn't read the 'simplified example'. Sorry didn't mean to come off like I was correcting you :O

edit 2: More powerful CPUs are always going to be more expensive. But in the case of VPS it might not be the case as most hosts use vcores meaning that you're not getting a real core. So if the server is their most popular you might not get as much performance as say a less populated VPS , for instance if an i7 vps is over populated versus an i5 being under good chance you'd get better performance from the i5. And on top of all that, its also rare for hosts to completely disclose how they allocate cpu resources. So its something you just have to do trial by error to get a good idea on what is the best choice.

To over complicate things further, Xeon CPUs will offer many times more cores and threads and would give you more depth of allocation. So I guess it comes down to what you want to do with the VPS?
