I used WHMCS from 2008 - 2013 and Blesta from 2013 - Present. However please note I'm a distributor and I'm going to be as non bias as I can here.

WHMCS:

Whmcs is the popular choice in web hosting companies today because they have most features and modules so you can get started straight away. They use the smarty framework and it's backed by cPanel as cPanel bought out 49% of the shares. You can only buy the monthly tiers on WHMCS unless you can buy an Owned license from someone who doesn't want it. A lot of third party addons have been created to fill in the bits WHMCS hasn't had. They had a history of exploit attacks by Localhost in 2013 so they did a bounty thing on bugcrowd.com/whmcs/

Blesta:
Blesta has been around since 2007 but they went pubic in about 2008 I believe as there was a gap in the market, 3.x was the newest version which was rebuilt from the ground up in 2013. They have the most popular addons and features most companies need to get started but not fully featured but they have a small development team. Blesta has had a few XSS security exploits which were found after two independent auditors checked the code however Localhost didn't find any. Blesta uses their own minPHP framework and h2o instead of Smarty. Blesta has Owned licenses and monthly licenses and has true multi-currency support and multiple companies (at an extra cost).

That's the basics of what I know to compare them, but WHMCS has a 30 day refund period and Blesta has a free 30 day trial to give them both a go and see what works for you.

We use Blesta now, and before we used WHMCS.
We prefer Blesta, however you will find that many plugins are not available in Blesta, and their domain manager really really sucks.
If you pretend to use Blesta straight on forget it. You have to use external plugins (i highly recommend cPanel extended) and many other add ons to make it at least minimal usable.
We also like to use the no-big-dogs-in-town and give some help/support to new kids on the block, so we pretend to keep using Blesta, and until now we are really really happy with it special with version 4.x.

IMO Blesta is just a lower end WHMCS on a budget and not as feature rich. For the $5 or so you save with Blesta I feel it's not worth it and just spend the little extra for WHMCS.

Some people really like it but it's not for me.

I always tell our clients.

Both WHMCS and Blesta provides similar functions. If you are looking for a platofrm that handles the basic, either one of them would be fine. Go with the one you are most comfortable with.

To compare:
Blesta offers more option when it comes to Billing.

Blesta also offers customers a 30-day trial and a demo platform, for you to decide on whether you are fine with it.

However, WHMCS offers an affiliate system, which gives you with a way to reward customers for promoting your hosting.

WHMCS is far better than Blesta. WHMCS is really a complete solution for a web host but Blesta is a limited version and not so feature-rich.

I have to say if WHMCS is far better than Blesta why does changing a clients preferred currency just change the symbol? So all invoices for example from $100 to £100 that works out at $132.86?

Nothing is perfect in the world. I didn't say that WHMCS is completely bug-free but they are better. If they wouldn't be, they won't have these type fo huge customer base. Even we wouldn't use their service.
