When you purchase a domain, your name, address and contact information is also published online. Normally, this leaves you open to stalkers, identity theft, fraud, and spam. By paying for domain privacy, which is usually $10 a year, your identity will not be shown.

Do you pay web hosts for domain privacy or is it okay with you even if your contact info is shown online? Also, why do they allow hosting companies to publish our contact information for everyone to see? Shouldn't there be autonomic privacy and confidentiality? I consider this a sly scheme for hosting companies to make more money. :bash:

What are your thoughts?

I don't pay for domain privacy because I don't really care if people contact me about buying my domains. Anyway, though, I don't really check the email connected to my domains anyway - so I wouldn't know about such emails, However, though, I don't blame certain people for wanting domain privacy. I mean, if the email you use a lot is also the one used to register a domain, then you might not want to be bugged all the time.

Yes I totally agree about having autonomic privacy and confidentiality. Why do you have to pay for something that should be free, and by free I mean your info shouldn't be public, most companies love compartmentalization but this is too much, you shouldn't pay for something that's obviously should be free by logic

When I registered my domain, I also bought whois guard protection. The domain cost me about $9.88 and I had to pay $2.18 for whois guard priotection. When I was renewing my domai in the second year, I did not buy domain privacy. I did this on purpose, I wanted to see what efects it has on my website performance. However, I believe that we need to habve domain privacy.

I always buy domain privacy because not only are there insane people out in this world. But if you don't buy domain privacy you will be spammed with people calling from all parts of the world to try and sell you stuff for your domain. And as awesome as my website is I have even had people try to sell me on website design. So in the end paying for domain privacy is a small price to pay for my sanity.

Like Soulwater mentioned above sometimes is money well spent, otherwise most hosting providers and some registrars offer free whois privacy, even upon renewal.

Having worked with several our clients, we found a trend that leads us to believe there is a trend.

1. New Domain Registrations - There are many sites and services that will list all new domains registered that day. i.e. http://registered.today/ But there are plenty of others. Many "terrible" Web Developers, graphic artists, business consultants, etc pull this info and then proceed to spam, email, etc any contact info they can find. I have one client that got 87 phone calls in a single day about building a new website, etc.

2. Renewed Domains - People often get emails / letters in the mail telling them their domain is expiring and they need to renew it through a different registration company. But often there are no phone calls, etc.

So its recommended you use Whois Privacy for new domains, but it can safely be canceled the next years, just knowing you will get a few emails or letters in the mail.

I cancelled domain privacy subscription when I renewed domains, even the hosted ones. When I was registering a new domain, I did not buy domain privacy. I received a lot of spam emails asking me to host my domain or develop a website. However, I did not get any emails for the domains that were renewed without privacy protection. Therefore, my conclusion is you should get domain provacy on the first year and no need to get a privacy on the second year.

Generally domain privacy is free of cost. It's important for preventing the spam emails related to domain. Domain privacy will hide the details of domain registrar, registrant email address , your contact number that is all public information regarding the domain.

Some companies in the UK charge for domain privacy and some don't. Its law in the UK for domain names to have a legal registrant published on a public registry

To be fair, if you are running a business, it is best to show your info, as some may doubt a company that hides his WHOIS, but I do agree domain registars milk us for charging for domain privacy..

We buy our domains in OVH and to add privacy we don't have to pay, however if you are running a business i also agree you shouldn't hide your information.

Well, I don't hide my details when I opt for a domain. I don't think it's feasible or advisable for businesses or sellers to hide their details and such there's no benefit for opting for domain privacy. If you're, however, aiming at a more personal level and don't care about monetizing your websites, then for personal reasons it's better to hide your details. For example, if you're writing about experiences, or even about some areas of concern where you'd like to go anonymous. In such conditions you should use domain privacy if you don't want someone to track down your details.

Domain registrars are bound by ICANN rules to show the contact details publically. Hosting providers have nothing to do with it :)

As for the privacy protection itself, - it's paid because the registrars themselves 'bend' those ICANN rules and use their own information in WHOIS details instead. This basically transfers all the responsibility and consequences to them, thus they made this service paid.

If we want to have the privacy option baseline, we shouldn't blame the hosting companies or the registrars. ICANN is making the rules here.

Generally domain privacy is without charge. It's important to prevent the junk e-mails related to sector. Domain comfort will hide the details of sector domain registrar, registrant current email address , your number that is all public information regarding the sector.

I think I pay around $2.50 or something for domain privacy. I don't get stalkers or much spam email as I have gmail and don't sign up for websites or promotions which would open me up to tons of spam email. But privacy never hurts. Lots of people out there looking to steal identities or in some cases just hassle people. $2.00+ a year for that little bit of extra protection isn't too much in my opinion.

Yes, I pay for my domain privacy so that it makes it "slightly" more difficult for other marketers to spy on your other sites. If someone run a whois search on one of your niche sites, they can't just instantly see the other 10 niche sites you run. Still depends on your business model. This is a valuable thing. If you run AdSense content sites for example. it still depends...
