The searches are visible only if you are running campaign from that account. Google now hides that data from those who are only using the tool for keyword research and not for setting campaigns.

I am not running a campaign on Google Adwords from my account, but I am able to see how many average monthly searches a given keyword has. For example, if you look for a keyword, but if you don't see a specific number, but only a dash ''-'' , this means they don't have enough data to calculate this number. Or in other words - the keyword is not really popular.

Use the Google AdWords keyword tool to find out how many searches are performed for the keywords you'd like to use, and then plug those keywords into the Google search engine to get the number of competitors.

Or you may try Ahrefs keywords explorer tool, but I think it's not available for free.
