What do you mean by "addons" ?
Because to improve a website performances, the first steps are to use the latest version of php, with also the latest version of MySQL or MariaDB.
After that you can setup a caching system like memcached or redis to improve the loading speed of your website.

In order to improve your website performance , you will need to tweak the server resources so server optimization which includes apache , memory etc..

make sure you are using updated PHP versions , as well as you can use technologies like litespeed , nginx

make sure your images are optimized , the pages are optimized .. technically minimize css , js other things .

so lot more stuff to do .

there are tools to check the website performance , just google them and you will be able to use the proper procedure.

I wouldn't look at add-ons but optimization.

Agreed but optimizing your website is not enough if you use hosting software to optimize your server first, it will will improve more.

btw, does any one here hear about google pagespeed module?

this can help improve the speed for a website?

I am looking into it.

Plugins might do the opposite for you and slow it down even further, website optimization is the first step, try to use some tools to compress the images first, than go look for errors within your code. After that you should look to optimize your VPS on a OS level aswell of optimizing the webserver, apache and mysql tuning will boost the performance.
