I know that this might sound like a dumb question but can someone tell me what the term "remote desktop port" means in hosting terms?

I have seen this in my searches but nobody explains what it means.

It just means gives you a GUI just as if you were in front of the console. This is most common on windows server using RDP but can also be used on Linux in various different ways.

Remote desktop can mean a lot of different things these days.
From virtual console based VPS cloud access to remote control software and many other options in between I can understand how the term " Remote Desktop" can be confusing these days.

I think "remote desktop port" doesn't mean anything different in hosting terms.

If you are using a Windows VPS, Remote Desktop Port means RDP's port, which is 3389. If you are using Linux VPS/Cloud VPS, there is no terms "Remote Desktop Port", because most providers provide console access using VNC, noVNC, Java, etc. and you can access using browser.

Could you please post the link where you found "remote desktop port" terms?

It means you can use Windows RDP (or third party services such as Citrix) with whatever hosting plan you have. Its not offered in a shared hosting plan but it is native to Windows VPS and dedicated servers and should always be offered in those plans, at least for admin purposes. It can also refer to virtual desktops where productivity can occur on a remote desktop instead of on a local desktop

Further to above information the default remote desktop port in windows servers is set to 3389 , you can easily change this port through registry for security purposes. The older version of windows server 2003 was supporting 2 simultaneous Remote Desktop connections to the windows server however now in newer Windows servers version like 2k12 , 2k16 you have purchase licenses for RDP access. The licenses are of 2 types either per Device or Per user.

No, not at all. It's a valid question. Genuinely speaking, remote desktop is a part of virtual desktop, and the topic has been in the limelight in the pandemic era as the companies shifted to these technologies. Now coming to your question, a remote desktop port is a technical term used by IT experts, but what's important is to know what is remote desktop.

In layman's terms, a remote desktop is that you are sitting in one location and then operating the same desktop from some other location virtually. There are many new technologies like VDI, which gives cloud-hosted virtual desktop to the end-user in which you can operate these desktops from any remote location from your device.

I hope it's clear to you. Let me know if you need any further help.

Remote Desktop port is a exclusive port that allows remote networks to other processors, normally over TCP port 3389. It delivers network access for a remote operator over an encoded channel. Network administrators use RDP to diagnose issues, login to servers, and to accomplish other remote actions. Remote users use RDP to log into the administration's network to access email and files.

Remote Desktop port permits you to access your computer from a different computer. You can open the Remote Desktop port only on your computer to let it to be accessed only on your local network or open it also on your router to use the computer over the Internet. Before you open the remote desktop port on a router or firewall program, you will need to allow your operator account to have Remote Desktop privileges on the computer you want to access.

Remote desktop default port is 3389, you can use this or you can confirm this with your provider too.
You can also change remote desktop port with few steps.

Remote Desktop Port (RDP) is a Microsoft exclusive port that allows remote connections to additional computers, normally above TCP port 3389. It delivers network access for a remote operator over an encrypted channel. Network administrators use RDP to identify issues, login to servers, and to accomplish other remote actions. Remote users use RDP to log into the administration's network to right to use email and files.

If your system has Remote Desktop enabled, it is attending for networks on port 3389. Subsequently this port is both recognized and can be used to attack accounts, it is low hanging fruit for script kiddies and bots considering for a stress-free target.

A remote desktop is a Microsoft program that allows a user to connect to a computer in another location, see that computer’s desktop and interact with it as if it were there. For example, you can use all of your work computer’s programs, files, and network resources from your home computer, and it’s just like you’re sitting in front of your computer at work. By using a remote desktop, you can access your work files from home.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft that allows remote access to other computers through TCP port 3389. It allows a distant user to connect to the network over an encrypted route. Network administrators use RDP to diagnose problems, log in to servers, and do other remote tasks. Remote users, for example, utilize RDP to connect to the organization's network and access email and files.
