Exim or Dovecot

I can not distinguish what is the difference between Exim and Dovecot, are they the same? and which one is better?
Do I need to setup them both on my VPS hosting or for any hosting control panels?

Hi Compwiz,

They are different things.

Exim is a (MTA) Mail transport agent which receives mail from the client and delivers it to the destination mail server and receives mail sent from other servers.

Dovecot is a IMAP and POP3 mail server which allows users to login to their mailbox.

WHM/cPanel servers have a choice of either Dovecot or Courier for POP 3/IMAP mailbox access.

You can check on a WHM servers which you are using by going to WHM >> Mail server selection.
cPanel only supports Exim as it's MTA

Exim has nothing to do with bounced mail or spam, like I said it just receives mail from clients with mailboxes on that server and receives mail sent to those mailboxes from an external server. If you do not have Exim or another MTA like sendmail the server will not to able to send or receive any mail.

You can also check within your cpanel account under server information.
exim (exim-4.87-7.cp1156.x86_64) up
According to my WHM Dovecort can no longer be selected.
