A firewall is a security device that can be a software program or a hardware device. In your case its a software firewall that you have enabled.Firewall is mainely used to secure your server , for closing non operational ports from where the server can be hacked. It also helps you to protect your server from DDOS attacks (9 not completely but at some extent)

If you have enabled the firewall , the firewall itself will take care of the things opening the required port and closing the non operational ports of the server.

what control panel are you running on the VPS ?

I would not assume this. Even after enabling the firewall, you should still check to make sure everything is correctly configured for your needs.

Hi Harry

I would not just enable the firewall without knowing exactly what rules it is using or you could cause serious connectivity issues with your VPS.
A firewall in simple terms is a data filtering system. For example you might want to restrict access to a service such as the web server if the VPS is a web development server so no one can view your sites while under development apart from yourself or those you want to grant access.

A firewall is a piece of hardware or software that helps prevent malware and malicious attacks from entering a computer or a network of computers through the Internet. The name firewall comes from the real-world protection that prevents fire from penetrating beyond that point. Firewalls are common barriers between attached garages and a house, and between an automotive engine and the passenger compartment.

Hi Harry P, This somewhat silly video from Techquickie on YouTube can explain some of the very basic ideas.

A firewall could block possible attacks, but if you don't know what you are doing with it, it could also accidentally block things that you actually want to allow. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution. You need to figure out who you want to block and who you want to give access to and when. Do some thorough research, and possibly think about getting a managed server or highering an admin. If you don't know what a firewall is, you probably need some assistance with administering your server. At the very least, talk to your current provider and find out more about their firewall. --Katie, Marketing, Hetzner Online

A firewall is a network security system that uses a collection of user-defined rules to filter incoming and outgoing network traffic. In general, the purpose of a firewall is to reduce or eliminate unwanted network communications while allowing all authorized communications to pass freely.

Everything that enters and exits your computer is watched when it is secured by a firewall. The firewall keeps track of all of this data, allowing only 'good data' to pass through while preventing 'bad data' from getting into your computer.

A firewall is a network security technology that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic according to the organization's previously set security standards. A firewall is a device that protects a private internal network from the public Internet. A firewall's primary goal is to allow non-threatening traffic while preventing dangerous traffic.

Types of Firewalls

Packet filtering

A small amount of data is analysed and distributed according to the filter criteria.

Proxy service

Network security system that protects when filtering messages at the application layer.

Stateful inspection

The dynamic packet filter checks the active connection and determines which network packet is allowed through the Firewall.

Next Generation Firewall (NGFW)

Deep Wall Inspection Check of the present of the walls.

There are 2 types of firewall service
- Hardware firewall
- Software firewall

The hardware firewall is a hardware device that lies between your network and server by security rule by filtering incoming and outgoing network traffic based on a set of user-defined rules as well top attacks types filter. The use of a firewall is to reduce the occurrence of unwanted network communications as well processes while allowing all legitimate communication to flow from your server to the end-users.

Overall this service is always a plus point to your server and it will protect you from nowadays real-world attacks.

Hey there!
A firewall is a security system that is designed to protect a computer or network from unauthorized access. It does this by blocking communication between the protected network and other networks. Firewalls can be either software or hardware-based.
Hardware-based firewalls are installed on the network's routers and gateways. They work by inspecting all traffic that passes through them and blocking any traffic that doesn't meet the specified security criteria.
Software-based firewalls are installed on each computer that is connected to the network. They work by inspecting all traffic that passes through them and blocking any traffic that doesn't meet the specified security criteria.
