Are you using a shared cpanel hosting plan?
Softaculous is a Auto Installer for cPanel which comes both in a free and premium form, the main difference between those two is that the free version comes only with 55 scripts and the premium with over 400 auto install scripts.
Keep in mind some providers dont offer the premium version to cut down costs, however any high-end shared hosting provider should have the premium version available for their clients.

HI Philippe

Softaculous is a front end applications installer, as HostBastic said their is a free and a premium version but any good host should have of invested in the premium version a life time premium version is only $70-$150 depending on if it's a VPS or dedicated licenese.

You should have access to Softaculous from your cPanel just do a search for "Softaculous apps installer" in your control panel search bar.

From here you can search for and install almost every popular web app you could want.

Can I install it as a free version independently on VPS or install it as an addon in WHM/cPanel? I have never used this application before.
