How to check bandwidth usage of a VPS?

Although I saw exact number of bandwidth usage that my hosting provider showed in hosting features but I can not clarify which determine bandwidth of a VPS or how to check it on a VPS?

Hi Kaz,

If you want to monitor total bandwidth of a server their are many ways of doing this but I recommend the following tools.

vnStat http://humdi.net/vnstat/
nTop http://www.ntop.org/ (GUI front end included)

GUI Front end for vnstat http://www.sqweek.com/sqweek/index.php?p=1

I usually check bandwidth usage in my hosting control panel but don't know which decide number of bandwidth on a VPS hosting or server you are having.

Nagios is very detailed and high performance. The front end is very clear and nicely organised.

@KazWolfe What kind of virtualization management panel do you use? There should be a bandwidth usage stats there. Alternatively, you'd ask your web host does your VPS is configured on a separate VLAN (which I doubt) or is there any monitoring system you'd use?

I am using WHM/cPanel on my VPS hosting. I know it is showing bandwidth usage there but I am just curious how a VPS calculate bandwidth usage.
