Shared hosting is the most basic hosting package you can get. I will have everything at minimum from a host's view. A reseller hosting is something which the host expects you to redistribute. Naturally, it normally have more resources and higher price than basic shared hosting packages.

People say a reseller account is nothing but a big shared hosting account.

This is not correct, a reseller account is far more than just a big shared hosting account. Hosting multiple domains/accounts on shared hosting requires the use of addon or sub domains which do have security and performance implications. A reseller account is more or less just like your own cPanel server that you have a limited number of functions under your WHM compared with full access on your own VPS or dedicated.

answers above are pretty good but to clear things up a bit more:

Shared is one single hosting account given to your client which has slow as it shares the same resources with many while usually having a cap on what you can use in regards to storage, bandwidth, RAM, CPU, etc.

Reseller is being able to make a lot of shared accounts with each having its own caps for storage, bandwidth, RAM, CPU, etc. It is best if manage a lot of small websites or if you plan to sell shared hosting however do not have the knowledge or/and the budget to do it on a dedicated.

A reseller is white label which means if you do decide to sell it, you will have your own custom login addresses for your customers. This will prevent from your customers finding out you are reselling any other companies hosting.

How if a reseller sell you a reseller account, after that you sell shared accounts from this seller. Or you can sell reseller accounts from reseller account you bought? does this work?

When a reseller hosting becomes a VPS hosting? or never? is there a condition set for this?

Hi Chris

To sell reseller hosting from your reseller account you needs a "master reseller" account.

A reseller account is just an account on our hosting providers servers. A VPS is your own server. You can easily move your reseller account on your own VPS.

If you get a usual reseller you are only allowed to sell shared hosting and maybe even resell their VPS and other services if they permit you to like we do. However to sell your own reseller using your reseller account you need something known as Master reseller or even alpha reseller.

From what i understand you are asking when you can turn your reseller hosting to a vps hosting. Well you can always transfer everything to a dedicated and create your own VPS, shared, reseller out of the dedicated however this is expensive and requires a knowledge to be able to do proper configurations.
If you dont want to run on a dedicated and stick to reseller then you can still sell VPS depending on who your provider is.Almost all providers allow you to reseller their VPS, now of course that means less profit.

A shared hosting account are account that shares one ip address and its commonly known as basic web hosting plan or package. and a reseller account is a package where you can hosting more shared hosting plans or package with the aid of the WHM. A reseller account can be run on a vps server or dedicated server depending on the size of files hosted on your server. You can get a dedicated server and run vps hosting and reseller hosting business on a dedicated server.

I've the comparison between hosting types such as free hosting, shared hosting, vps hosting, reseller hosting,...example as your question below:

SHARED HOSTING

Pros
Most common use by wide variety need, from personal to small or medium business
Almost shared hosting plans are cheap but there are some specific plans with additional fee

Cons
Almost shared hosting plans come with free domain name
Always have technical support via ticket or email or forum
Easy to upgrade to higher plans when needed
Because they use a single server to share between many clients, so there are some security risks introduced
Because using sharing resources, so if your website have a huge traffic or using much cpu resources, you need to upgrade to the higher plans
If one site getting harmful for the server, others may be affected due to using shared single server.
You're maybe restricted in using some programming language and file type supported (it's based on each hosting provider)

RE-SELLER HOSTING

Pros
You can build up your own hosting company using reseller plans
You need to buy a power reseller plan from some hosting provider and sell again

Cons
There is very little maintenance required
You can get more profit by selling many hosting packages
May be you will need to give a fast technical support to your client in case they need urgent help
You have a little control over your hosting resources

You can visit here for more others Compare Web Hosting Types

Hope this helps!

Instead of using a dedicated server, can I use a strong VPS server to create smaller VPS packages and reseller hosting accounts?

Hello Chris,

We have customers who are getting our VPS Premium / Business or Custom plan. They install WHM/cPanel and start selling their own shared hosting plans. Selling shared hosting under VPS gives you more freedom and control over your resources and the best part is that you can upgrade your VPS resources at any time!

This way you are not man in the middle but real hosting provider ;)

With share hosting, you get a single account to manage your website and other Addon domains under that same account.

With reseller hosting, you are able to create separate hosting accounts for each domain name, each account is a stand-alone for each website. You can also be able to resell shared hosting to multiple clients but managed from a centralized system say WHM.

You can be able to upgrade from a shared hosting account to a VPS, and as a reseller you can also upgrade to a VPS plan. A VPS plan is higher than Share and reseller. The difference is simple, you have some sort of allocated resources compared to shared and reseller hosting which you have to share the available server resources with other users.

Shared hosting

If you want to host your own website only and it has limited traffic, shared hosting good acc to your requirement. You will have to manage and regulate most of the operations via control panel and FTP

Reseller hosting

It is one step ahead than regular shared hosting plan. If you are gooing for resell web hosting service and you can't afford VPS or a dedicated server, reseller hosting is ideal option for you. Reseller hosting will help to creat your hosting packages and you can resell it as per your need.

Reseller hosting control panel will allow you to add/remove/edit hosting accounts within your reseller account. Reseller hosting can be good startup who have limited cost investment.
