Hi to everyone. A friend sent me this question below and i will love to get more ideas on the subject matter.

"I have had a couple discussions with some friends about the "non-necessity" of a Plesk or cPanel to manage a VPS Server operating on Windows OS Server. They keep insisting on the fact that it is needed because they code on .NET. Would appreciate if more information could be brought to light on this and the possibility of managing the server without a cPanel."

Your thoughts will be appreciate

Plesk is a great control panel. It got some bad reviews from previous versions, but Plesk 11 & 12 are much improved.

Plesk is simply a control panel. It does not make .Net applications work, it simply makes it possible to have multiple customer accounts and a lot easier to manage the server. I would recommend using Plesk or another control panel, but it is not necessary to have a control panel, just to host a .net website.

Without a control panel, you would add your website to IIS and create your databases in SQL Server directly. Install and configure MailEnable or other mail server. Setup DNS and ftp, etc, etc.

If i get you right, adding your server to IIS and creating your own database in SQL Server directly and every other setup is done by the client ain't it? Unless the provider/seller of the Server offers to provide guidance where the client has difficulty attaining results? Thanks in advance for your response and any other..

Typically, yes.

If you have a managed server, then your host would help with some things, but they will usually not go as far as setting up every database for you, etc. Your managed support would/should get IIS/SQL/DNS/FTP/etc setup and configured for you, but it would be up to you to add and make changes to databases and websites as needed. However this is something to ask and workout with your host.

It is not necessary though. You have the alternative of Parallels Plesk Panel. If you ever heard of WebsitePanel. It is free of cost windows control panel and you can install it from any windows server 2008/2012. In the event that you require more information with respect to the WebsitePanel just PM me.

Regarding cPanel, you couldn't install or run it on a windows server as it is meant to be used for the Linux distro. In Linux, you likewise get free control panel called "centos-webpanel".

If you are good in managing servers and have good command over cmd [command prompt], you can undoubtedly manage everything without installing any control panel.

Plesk is a superb user interface. It got a bit of bad reviews from previous versions, but Plesk 11 & 12 tend to be enhanced.

Plesk is only a user interface. It doesn't make .Internet programs work, it really assists you to have multiple customer accounts and the majority simpler to handle the server. I would suggest using Plesk or any other user interface, but there is no need to possess a user interface, simply to host b .internet website.

These control panels make you life easier to manage a server. If you are technically sound, you may manage everything manually but that might look a good idea at first but when it comes to troubleshooting, it becomes nightmare.

In market there are free and paid control panels for both windows and linux based machines. Plesk and cPanel are highly recommended paid control panels by most users. Plesk 11/12 with full features offers great optimization on windows server where as cpanel works wonder on linux based servers. Make sure you have ample resources to handle the control panel otherwise it would slow down the server. For more information regarding availability of these panels, do contact sales team of hosting provider before you place order.

Bottom line would be control panels are good, use them. Cheers
