Optimizing a website must consider not only the keywords and target audience, but also a number of algorithms on which pages are indexed by search engines. To stay on top display targeted keywords, you need to optimize your page correctly, and avoid some mistakes that may attract penalties from Google.

Common SEO Mistakes

1. Content copied or irrelevant for readers
Like your page visitors, Google appreciates very much the content, but not just any content. If your website does not provide useful information, the text is not reliable, is copied from other sources and is full of grammatical errors, you have all chances to be penalized.

A properly optimized site provides quality content, useful and relevant to the topic or niche that, and original articles written by people with experience and authority in the online environment. Longer articles that educate the reader and are supported by solid references are more likely to be appreciated by visitors and search engines.

So if you're ready to hire an SEO company to optimize your site, make sure you have people in the team and able to provide quality content to avoid penalties and ease your way to leading positions in search pages. Although it may seem counterintuitive, when it comes to SEO content, quality counts, not quantity.

2. Excessive Optimization
Less is more, even when it comes to SEO. If the text on your website is full of keywords thrown into the page only for a higher density, you have all chances to be penalized. Similarly, if you include too many keywords in meta tags in an attempt to manipulate search engine results, you get the opposite effect. Attention therefore to "specialists" SEO keywords that place 10 times in a text 3 paragraphs.

3. Low quality backlinks, purchased or do too much in a short time
For a better positioning on key terms, backlinks can be very powerful tools, but even here should not abuse. Too many links that direct to a site built just may indicate either that you have bought (and I mean the many offers like "200 links for $15"), and that Google considers spam.

Similarly, comments thrown at random on the same niche blogs or forums just to be able to insert a link to your website, or articles posted in different directories can affect your optimization efforts. May I add here the famous exchange links (link exchange), often directing to very poor quality sites, internal links broken and hidden in various pages of your website.

In addition to these errors, excessive use of H1 tags, keywords too many header or footer placed in the site, and inappropriate placement of advertisements on your website can attract penalties from Google and affect your placement in search results.

Do you have any other common mistakes in SEO??

SEO is usually used to found your content in different search engine. There are plenty of small small mistake that usually we do and those mistake effects a lot.
Here is the mistake that we usually do.
1.) Not targeting the right audience.
2.) Duplicate content
3.) Excessive amount of backlinks created at the same time.

If we stop avoiding all this things then I am sure we will get better result.

OP - Nice post ;-) Here are some other things to consider...

For my perspective I see that the biggest mistake people make relates to not using the title and meta description tag or using the same title and description tag for all pages... This doesn't impact SEO wrt ranking on SERPs but it does impact whether people will click to your website when looking at the search results... Hence its important to write a great title and description which will get folks to click on through....

Once there on your site the next thing is to ensure that your bounce rate is low as can be as G's algo will be checking to see if visitors go back to the SERP and click on other links for those results - which also explains some of G's behaviour with the "Google Dance" as that I am sure is testing validity for increasing the rankings based on CTR or worse loss of rankings. Therefore when looking at your website you need to make sure that it looks appealing, easy to read and is informative - and that it answers the questions which people are seeking, otherwise we all know they are going to hit the back button and try another result....

From an advanced perspective the other big SEO mistake relates to off-page with backlinking profile having a large percentage of commercial anchor text/keywords... G's penguin algo clearly targets this and thus I aim for a backlinking profile to consist mostly of generic words like "click here" as well as branding and website name - with commercial anchors at 20% or below noting that this also needs to be varied with long tail.... That's also in addition to velocity of backlinks created over time which together raises G's algo flags for penalty should you cross certain thresholds but that's also checked against other signals such as social, traffic numbers - which explains how big brands can bypass that algorithimically as its legitimate but those gaming the system get caught...

The other thing relates to spam commenting for backlinks directly to your money/primary site... One it does nothing to get "NO Follow" links and further too many of them just lets G know that you are attempting to game the SERP's. I really can't get my head round all of the comment spam that still goes on today...

I hope that helps ;-)

Good post, although I have to disagree with this line here. I've ranked sites entirely with social media. Twitter, Facebook, We Heart It, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Fancy, and where ever else i can have a link to my site. Then I simply follow a certain amount of users (I know the limits of each social site) and run some FB campaigns and promoted tweets. All the while producing massive amounts of content from my site and sharing it to all networks, and still following, sharing, liking, blah, blah, blah

I hire a VA to handle all of this stuff. $2 an hour and I get every penny worth because she is awesome!

And thats pretty much it. I then let the link building do itself.

Well, I have let it build itself in the past. Now I know tricks and Black Hat that makes things go a little quicker. I mean, I'm talking affiliate sites for products that aren't going to matter in a few years, so who cares if they get hit.

I build pretty legitimately though so I don't have any problems. I outsource almost everything too. Not your normal Fiverr service though. I'm talking $1,600 a month.

Jay Wessman actually released a series of videos about ranking with social networks. I almost didn't take the guy serious (you'll see why if you check em' out) but his methods do work. It's all social media. There's some things here and there that you should steer clear of but for the most part he's pretty solid.

I also still use these methods today. ;) It's not going to matter in a minute. I can't stress it enough that SEO is changing, keyword ranking is dying with conversational search, PR is out, and all that is going to be left is PA and DA. Also might want to start diving into some of the data aggregators the government uses. A good one to look into is ikanow.

I'm actually studying the different languages Googel uses and I am uncovering some pretty interesting stuff on the way it's crawlers and algorithms detect.

It'll be an interesting read. Coming soon ;)

Cheers

Nice one ;-) I was talking more in reference to nofollow spam comments as a footprint which is easy to spot...

With regards to social for a while I thought there was a direct relationship with G's algo - but with with G+ never taking off and G authorship down the toilet (I never used it as I always figured its another footprint to stay away from)... It did get me thinking which is that I still cant get my head round why G would risk putting its ranking algo on to third party platforms which it struggles to get access too... and at the same time G is not doing so great on social....

My current thinking is that social corroborates CTR and bounce rates (minus the backlinks) and thus you can achieve some rankings (and perhaps great rankings...) ... as you can do with epic content marketing....

Yeah for sure agree SEO is changing... but actually think its easier to rank once you get your head around G's algo... For example I used to spend ages developing spun content (TBS) plus GSA to create tiered link campaigns... Now days just find it easier to write an epic piece of content.... and in the same way I agree social helps -but prerequisite to CTR/bounce rates.... So in my opinion its indirect but hugely important if that makes sense...

The other thing which I think that is great these days is that you dont need that many backlinks to rank.... hence I really advocate building PBNs... with dropping in a link or two over many weeks but nothing more than that.... noting Silos are hugely important with G's hummingbird....

Look forward to hearing more on the topic of social... For sure I'm going to test/look into it more ;-)

Cheers!
