AMD EPYC vs. Intel Xeon: Which CPU Would You Choose for a New Dedicated Server Today?

If you were deploying a new dedicated server today, would you choose AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon, and why?

Beyond benchmark numbers, I'm curious what has influenced your real-world deployments over the past year.

Some things that come to mind:

Single-threaded vs. multi-threaded performance
Virtualization (Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V)
Power efficiency
Memory capacity and bandwidth
PCIe lane availability
Reliability and long-term stability
Cost versus overall value

Have your preferences changed over the last couple of hardware generations, or are you still sticking with the same platform?

For boxes that mostly serve PHP sites, I stopped looking at core count first and started looking at per-core clock. WordPress and custom PHP are single-threaded per request, so 32 slower cores lose to 16 faster ones even though they win every benchmark chart. EPYC still wins outright when the box gets carved into VMs, mostly on memory channels and PCIe lanes rather than raw compute.

The thing that actually decided our last purchase was neither vendor. It was what ECC RAM cost per GB on that platform, and whether the NVMe was on lanes that were not already shared. I have not run Sapphire Rapids in production so I cannot say anything useful about AMX or QAT. Are you buying outright or leasing? Leased Xeon boxes tend to sit a generation or two behind, which changes the answer a lot.

EPYC for anything where you are packing VMs or containers, purely because of memory channels and PCIe lanes per socket. When I sized a single socket box for mixed hosting the lane count decided it, since I could fit NVMe and a 10G card without a switch chip and still have room left.

Where I still look at Intel is single thread latency on PHP heavy workloads. Most WordPress and WooCommerce pages are one core waiting on one query, so a high clock part beats a 96 core part there, and both vendors have high frequency SKUs now. The thing that actually decided my last two builds was neither: it was what the DC had in stock with decent IPMI and a spare identical board on the shelf. What are you sizing it for, virtualisation density or per site latency?
