Troubleshooting Common Email Issues in Plesk

Oct 26, 2018
Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well! I've recently encountered a few email issues while managing my domains in Plesk, and after a bit of research and troubleshooting, I thought it would be helpful to share some solutions for common email problems. If you're having trouble sending or receiving emails, these tips might help you resolve the issue.

1. Check Email Account Settings
First and foremost, ensure that your email account settings are correctly configured:

  • Incoming Mail Server (IMAP/POP3):
  • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
  • Username: Full email address (e.g., [email protected])
  • Password: The password you set for the email account
2. Verify DNS Settings
Incorrect DNS settings can lead to email issues. Make sure the following DNS records are correctly set up for your domain:

  • MX Records: Points to
  • A Record: should point to your server’s IP address
  • SPF Record: v=spf1 +a +mx -all
  • DKIM: Ensure DKIM is enabled and configured in Plesk
3. Check Mailbox Quotas
Sometimes, the mailbox might be full, preventing new emails from being received. To check and increase the mailbox quota:

  1. Go to Mail in Plesk
  2. Select the email address
  3. Click on Mailbox tab
  4. Increase the Mailbox quota
4. Review Blacklist Status
If your emails are not being delivered, your IP might be blacklisted. Use tools like MXToolbox to check your IP status and follow their delisting process if needed.

5. Examine Mail Logs
Plesk provides detailed mail logs which can be very useful for diagnosing issues. You can find the logs at:

  • /var/log/maillog (for Linux)
  • Plesk Panel > Tools & Settings > Mail Server Settings > Mail Log Settings (for Windows)
Look for any errors or warnings in the logs to pinpoint the issue.

6. Check Firewall Settings
Ensure that your firewall settings are not blocking essential ports for email:

  • IMAP/POP3: Port 143/110 (IMAP/POP3)
  • SMTP: Port 25/587/465
7. Restart Mail Services
Sometimes, simply restarting the mail services can resolve issues:

  1. Go to Tools & Settings in Plesk
  2. Click on Services Management
  3. Restart the Mail Server (Postfix/Qmail) service
8. Verify SSL/TLS Settings
Ensure that SSL/TLS is properly configured for secure email communication:

  1. Go to Tools & Settings in Plesk
  2. Click on SSL/TLS Certificates
  3. Ensure your domain has a valid SSL certificate
9. Test Email Functionality
Finally, test the email functionality using webmail (e.g., Roundcube, Horde) to determine if the issue is client-specific or server-wide.

I hope these tips help you resolve any email issues you’re experiencing with Plesk. If you have any other solutions or additional questions, feel free to share them in this thread!
