PTR is a pointer record, which is the opposite of, for example, an A record. PTR record resolves an IP address to a domain name (A records do the opposite). PTR records are normally used for reverse DNS.
PTR record means the reverse of "A" record and it resolved IP to domain record. It's much needed for a server to better deliver of emails at target servers.
The Opposite of the "A" record which provides the IP address associated with a domain name is exactly the PTR record ( DNS pointer record).
The relation between the PTR record and rDNS is that the DNS PTR records are used in reverse DNS lookups.
A reverse DNS lookup is used when a query starts with the IP address and looks up the domain name.
